Which Will Fly First, The 787 Or The 747-8?

"Boeing is currently developing two new airplanes. The all-new 787 Dreamliner tends to get the most attention because it would be the world's first mostly composite commercial plane.

But the company's new version of its jumbo jet, the 747-8, is also steadily heading toward first flight. Boeing has said that first flight would be in the fourth quarter of this year.

First flight of the 787 has been delayed indefinitely -- the world awaits Boeing's new time line.

So which will fly first, the 787 or the 747-8 Freighter?"

Right now, getting either one of the them flying will be an achievement in itself  Wink

I think the 787 will fly first, but not long ahead of the 747-8.  expressionless

Is there an online betting agency that allows you to wager on this?

The 748 flying before the 788 was one of the silly ideas that floated around all of last year but I'm begining to come down more and more on the 748 side of things - this programme's been nice and quiet recently - let's just hope it doesn't get too many cancellations / deferrals to detract from the good news when it takes to the air for the first time.

A few months back I read in one of these forums that certain 787 engineers had "completed" their job, and could now fully concentrate on the 748 program.
Oops........after the recent 787 hick ups, I wonder what program has the absolute priority now!

50/50 at the moment for first flight. If Boeing does not come with a bold, definitive statement about the 787 in the next 4 weeks, I´m sure the 748 will fly first.
But I´m sure now that the first 748Fs will be delivered before the first 787.
Almost unthinkable the 787 will not develop new problems.

Unfortunately "bold" and "definitive" could describe many of the statements that Boeing have made so far on the 787 program. After all, Boeing(Carson) asserted in mid-June at Le Bourget that the 787 flight would take place by the end of June. Perhaps accuracy would be a more desirable attribute of any future statements by Boeing on the 787.

Who can say whether there is not some bad news lurking in the (pun alert) wings on the 748F program. I speak not of Rummy's unknown unknowns, but of issues that may already be known by the engineering team, which have either not bubbled their way up to the marketing and management, or are beyond the comprehension skills of the "bean counters and lawyers". So we do not really know how far behind the schedule the 748F *really* is compared to what has already been announced.

My personal feeling is that despite all the problems that the 787 schedule has had, the 787 will still be able to take to the air before the 748F.

I think that the 787 won't fly this year. So the 748 will do it first, if there is no surprise from Boeing.

I must confess when I read the thread's title on the forum I burst into laughter! Now it all makes sense to me!

Now, seriously speaking, I believe Boeing would be putting their hands not in fire, but in liquid napalm if they don't put the 787 in the air soon. Flying the 748 before the 787 would be a death sentence for Boeing... the customers will be very very pissed off, especially after seeing Lufthansa using the 748 before ANA using the 787...

Let's hope it doesnt happen!

Quoting WestWing (Reply 10):

Completely agree. The 747-8 may not be an all-new design like the 787, but Boeing have outsourced quite a few things on the 748 project as well, including some of the design. That worries me. First flight of the 748 has been pushed backwards twice already, but that went hardly noticed as the focus of many people was on the 787 delays... I remember Clickhappy had heard a few rumors that all wasn't so well during final body join of the 747-8, and he's been right more often than I would like to have seen  Sad

A death sentence for Boeing? I don't think so. Will the 787 customers be unhappy? Sure, but let's hope they'll order the 748i instead!  crossfingers  Wouldn't that be a beautiful result  cloudnine

Wow! That is a sobering reminder of how far the 787 has fallen behind expectations. I sure do hope that 4.25 years after the first flight of the 787, Boeing will have delivered at least 17 of the planes to its customers like Airbus has with the A380. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

At least it's moving under its own power. Boeing photo below during taxi tests which began July 7. So far it's reached 100 kts.
