Delta Trans-Oceanic Inflight Service

Making my first ever international flight with DL to ATH next week and returning from BCN.
Haven't flown them in years. Their web-site tells little about what to expect in their economy cabin for service. Any idea of the seat comfort? In-seat entertainment options? Do they serve complimentary liquor? Is the food decent? Any special amenities for economy class passengers?

Also, does Delta offer upgrades on international flights at the time of check-in for a surcharge should seats be available?

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated,

I flew ATL-FCO a few years back and was not impressed. Old MD-11 equipment, charged for beer, IFE was a few tube TV's above, decidedly poor. They retired those planes, so I don't know what its like these days. Thankfully I was on AF codeshare on the return. Night and day difference.

Overall DL offers a fairly decent intercontinental Y service. Seats are fine and legroom is standard for Y class. The 763 has, IMHO, the best seating configuration of any longhaul aircraft. They serve a main meal after takeoff (usually a choice between chicken or pasta) and then a breakfast prior to arrival. Wine and beer are complimentary in Y class while all other alcoholic beverages will cost you (IINM the charge is $7). Entertainment-wise, DL does not currently have PTVs in economy on the 763 so all entertainment is on the main screen.

I thought the first drink was free then they charged after that?

Not exactly. The old policy was one free alcoholic drink with the main meal service with all others being charged. DL has now shifted to free beer and wine throughout the flight with all other alcoholic beverages being charged for.

I generally like Delta's international Y cabin & service. The only bad thing is the very limited recline that their current economy product offers. LH, AF/KLM are way better in that respect.

You should be on a 764 from BCN-JFK or BCN-ATL - this offers personal IFE in Biz & Coach. Took this flight last month and service was great.

I flew Delta to Atlanta from Brussels 2 weeks ago.
763, no PTV, the food was not bad and free drinks during the flight.
We also got an eyecover and earplugs.
The sound from the headset was awfull... And it wasn't my seat or headset, it was everywhere.
Overall not bad but I was happy the return was on a KLM A330  Wink

it was more than a few years ago if the last time you flew DL was on an MD11.

As has been well covered, the 763ER has DL's "least developed" coach seat; the NW 330s and the DL 764s are all comparable to other carriers in terms of seat and "hard product". As for soft product, DL is comparable regardless of the aircraft type.

DL does not offer upgrades on the day of departure on transoceanic flights.

How is DL on Latin America flights (excluding deep south flights)? Do cities such as SJO, GUA, PTY, GYE, CCS receive meals or are they buy on board?

I agree with OA412's summary and assessment. I flew on DL JFK-ATH and ATH-JFK late last year, 763 both ways in Y. Wine and beer and a featured mixed drink were complimentary in Y. Seat comfort was a bit above average and overall OK for a Y product T/A. Meal service was good. Entertainment is in-seat audio and ceiling-mounted tube TVs; although on the return 763 from ATH the video system was inoperative. All in all, though, I give DL reasonably high marks for the service and equipment, and I would fly DL again long-haul. Enjoy ATH and don't forget to give us a trip report when you get back!

I don't think the DL MD-11s ever qualified as "OLD", did they? The first two were delivered in '90 and I don't think it was in service much more than 10-11 years.

Perhaps not in the literal sense but definitely in cabin appearance, when you compare them to their replacement of the 772ER

The seats are milidly comfortable, judging by my expierence on a a330-300 flight from ams to dtw. The food is worse than my air india flight (they were out of chicken, only pasta was available). The inflight intertainment is some of the best I have seen, with 20+ movies.

It really depends on the aircraft.

If you're on a 763:
- terrible, old seats with no head support and short seatbacks; very uncomfortable for sleeping
- no PTVs, just an overhead screen

If you're on a 764:
- better seats with head support, etc.
- PTVs with AVOD

Regardless of plane:
- food = apallingly bad from JFK, usually better westbound
- I believe beer/wine are now complimentary throughout the flight, but at least one is free with the meal
- service really can be hit or miss

Correct, DL switched to NW's TATL service giving you free beer and wine plus a hot breakfast before arrival, which wasn't previously done before the merger.

Flew them a while back, service was OK. Eastbound there was a snack consisting of a drink and peanuts after departure, meal was -as previously said- a choice between chicken and pasta, before descent they served the la Pizza 4 formaggi. Flying westbound it was pretty much the same although the breakfast was kinda disappointing, just a small sandwich, a little cup of orange juice, some jam and a cold banana, therefore can't really say a warm breakfast was served.
Two year ago DL used to distribute menu cards in Economy and offered free häagen dazs ice cream inflight. Gone by now. B767-300ER is substandard compared to what other (US) carriers offer (PTVs for example), the B764 looks pretty nice however.

My nephew did BCN-JFK in the B764 in Y and it was a good ride for him. AVOD worked well and the food was fine considering it's airline food after all. He did JFK-MAD overnight on the B763 outbound and because he slept most of the way, the lack of PTV didn't bother him, but it certainly is missed if you can't sleep. Overall DL isn't too bad of a ride in Y if you're used to economy products. If however you ride up front more than just once in a blue moon, your expectations might be a bit different.
