Advantages Of Narrowbody Vs. Widebody

Wed Aug 05, 2009 12:39 pm

What are the advantages of a widebody over a narrowbody in the 200 seat category? The Boeing 757 can carry up to 228 passengers and yet the 767 also carries as many in two classes. Which is more economical? And is there an engineering reason/benefit to design a widebody rather than a narrowbody aircraft for that number of seats? I imagine a widebody aircraft is larger and so must be heavier. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Narrow bodies above 210 seats get very long - and through one aisle only boarding and deboarding gets too long. That was the reason the 757-300, which had a fantastic CASM for its time, failed on the market, and even the most efficient single aisle aircraft now, the A321 and the B737-900, sell less than the A320 resp B738.

The comparison 752/762 is not quite fair the 762 carries more passengers if you take the same seat pitches and ratio of C to Y.

Depends. From a cost standpoint, the 757 is better, since it's a lighter airframe. It's revenue potential is limited, however, due to the lack of cargo room, which the 767 has more of. So it really depends on the route you want to fly.
