Is Travel To The MRV (Mineralnye Vody) Area Wise?

Sat Aug 08, 2009 12:08 am

Normally I don't really care where I go, but I know that Mineralnye Vody and the Stavropol Krai regions of Russia border with Dagastan and the Chechen Republic but, unlike these waring regions, you hear relatively little about it. Is it a safe area to visit or is there the possibility of abduction or hostilities? Plus, what are the most interesting (read: oldest/rarest) aircraft to get there on?

I'm looking towards Thesis topics, at least a year in the future, but I don't want to consider an instillation in this region if I'm not going to be able to go there and do some studying.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Dan,
the area you are looking into gets you fairly close to North Ossetia-Alani for which an official travel warning (among some other regions within the Russian Federation) exists by the German Ministry for External Affairs, bu there is no such travel warning for Stavropol Krai.

Kavminvodyavia KMV seems to have their base at MRV, but nothing interesting in their active fleet. As you are looking for some time in the future, you sure are well aware that a/c-types employed very likely will change in the meantime, usually meaning that those you are looking into flying will be withdrawn in the meantime (or get a last-minute sub' by some boring B737NG / A320s Big grin ) ...

Thanks Holger, I'd be travelling in the countryside mainly (as far as I know right now) so I'd need to check how close I might get to those regions.

Russia is going to get quite boring for aircraft in the next few years  Sad

I don't know if this helps, but I have some friends flying there (don't know the details) from NYC, and they will be shooting a documentary about climbing a mountain there.

That does sound very interesting actually - I think the mountainous regions are much more dangerous as that's where the rebels etc... tend to hang out. When is it due to be broadcast?
