Can I Book Domestic Travel With A Foreign FF Club?

Wed Aug 19, 2009 12:00 am

I'm thinking of joining LH Miles & More next year since I will be moving to DC next year and will be able to take advantage of both *A hubs there. I notice however that the LH site does not allow me to book codeshared domestic US travel (I assume this is an 8th Freedom issue). Can I go to say UA.com and book a flight but use my M&M # to earn miles, or do I have to be a domestic US FF (so for *A either Mileage Plus or Dividend Miles until CO joins) member?

No you dont need to, you should be able to accrue domestically on M&M but make sure you read what types of flights you can accrue domestically (codeshared or any flight etc)

some foreign programs are a bit shaky in that practice

such as Evergreen Club, I can accrue on CO flights and redeem, I got a bargain by blowing EVA 35K miles on a CO award ticket when CO's mileage savers was not available and was asking for 50K or 60K one pass miles on same flights.

with Dynasty, I can easily get domestic DL flights off my Dynasty miles at 25K especially when DL skymiles is blacking it out.

But here is the catch with a foreign program. they often require higher fare levels of the domestic airline partner to let you accrue.

You can easily accrue your miles if you had lets say a regular skymiles card on the lowest DL fares you decided to book and some foreign programs like full Y fares to let you get miles.

So its handy to have both accounts, so when you for sure know you can accrue miles in that booking class on your foreign card, use it, but if not use the domestic one so you dont have miles wasted

I have a TAP Victoria card and I accrue miles when I travel domestically in the U.S. on Star Alliance. However, while I always seem to get the full credit on my flights on US, for some reason my flights on UA always get credited at half mileage (if at all - sometimes there are problems with the name on the tickets).
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

As for been able to book - the answer's yes, you will be able to book a reward ticket with any Star carrier using your LH account, but you will need to phone LH M&M. For example, a couple of years back I booked to fly SQ MAN-SIN-BNE using my US Dividend Miles. There's no way I could have booked that trip on US' website, but a 10 minute phone conversation was all that was needed. Also, in response to your question, no you won't be able to log into UA's website using your LH #
