IAD - Connecting Time

Thu Aug 20, 2009 12:51 pm

Dear all,

I will be flying in October GVA - IAD - LAS with a connecting time of 1h40 at Dulles airport.
I transited through Dulles last May and even if I had 2 hours 10 of connecting time, I almost missed the flight. The flight arrived from Geneva ontime but it took me almost 2 hours for the immigration.

I'm quite worried of missing my flight to LAS and it's the last flight of the day. What will happen if my flight arrives from Geneva ontime but I miss the connecting due to immigration. Will United Airlines take care of me and give me a room for the night or will United say that they are not guilty?

Thanks for your replies.

I assume you are flying United Airlines, yes?

First, United will automatically rebook you for the next available flight if you miss your connection.
But there is a FPS / INS sub-station within the United's "C" concourse for connecting passengers who are continuing on with United domestic.

Unfortunately, if you are *changing* airlines, be sure your luggage is correctly tagged for the transfer. And then you would be right -- one hour forty minutes is not enough time.

You will not make, unless there is no line at INS, which is very unlikely.

United will rebook you if you misconnect, but may not give you a hotel. Depends on the reason you are late getting in.

If you're NOT late getting in and you misconnect, they will almost certainly not give you a hotel. The minimum connection time for international passengers in IAD is 60 minutes I believe...

You're correct. I will be flying United Airlines.

I will be flying on a Sunday, is it possible that it will be less busy at immigration?

What about telling the people at the immigration that you're having a close connection and that you need to be at the gate at .... ? I'm sure they won't tell you anything like "bad luck for you - stay in the line and wait!"

I tried this last time I was in IAD...
Answer of the staff : "Everybody waiting at immigration has a connecting flight... If United Airlines sell ticket wilth a close connection, it's United's problem... "

BTW, I don't think that 1h40 can be considered as a close connection.. at least in Europe...

Perhaps -- after public school resumes August 31st and all families on annual vacation are out of the airports. But the last time I came through Dulles (Wednesday night) the place was packed.

Okay, hypothetically, I have you arriving on UA 975 from Geneva at 3:08pm. But according to the United Airlines online timetable, their next flight to Las Vegas would be at 5:30pm with an additional departure at 7:59pm.

In theory -- assuming you are connecting from United international to United domestic -- you have plenty of time to connect, and in addition, you have a back-up flight if you misconnect.

Unfortunately that's not correct. I will be flying the last Sunday of October, that means the 1st day of the new winter timetable. UA 975 arrives from Geneva at 3.24pm and flight to LAS is at 5.05pm and there is no flight after during the winter timetable.

The only two true varaibles here are weather delays leaving Geneva (not likely) and coming/goign from Dulles; and the "bucked up" IAD customs and immigration (C&I) process. Everytime I come through IAD on an international flight, C&I at Dulles seems to take forever; never enough staff, little real customer concern. I try to fly non-U.S. carriers and arrive at non-peak times, so that the line of Americans coming is is the shortest. By the way, there is also a real jerk at customs who acts like a high school bully if you are not careful.

You have been there before, just be polite and keep moving, you will be fine.

Hmmm.

Okay. The following variations for that date came up on the UA (USA) web site trip planner.

First Variation
UA975 --11:00-3:24 -- GVA-IAD
UA961 -- 5:13-6:30 -- IAD-ORD
UA110 -- 8:00-9:56 -- ORD-LAS

Second Variation
UA975 -- 11:00-3:34 -- GVA-IAD
UA433 -- 6:55-9:37 -- IAD-LAX
UA864 -- 10:40-11:58 -- LAX-LAS

Variations also came up using codeshare-partner USAirways

None of these are perfect.
Nevertheless, what do you think?  wave

Thanks a lot for the timetable!

It would also be great to transit in LAX... Then I would say that I have ever been to California  Smile It's almost the last state I've nerver been.
