First Flight Of Your Life?

Tue Sep 15, 2009 3:57 pm

Hi all,

Something that has always intrigued me is how many of us remember our first flights as though they were yesterday.

My first flight was an RH flight from HRE-BUQ when I was three. I don't remember that one very well, but the first memorable one was TP from JNB-FIH-LIS on the Tristar 500  Smile

I would love to know anyone elses who want to share  Smile

Brgds,

First flight was when I was an infant on Piedmont.

First one I remembered was ROC-BOS-PWM-BOS-ROC.

DC-9 ROC-BOS, BOS-ROC, USAir
MD-80 BOS-PWM, USAir
737-300? PWM-BOS, Delta

My first flight was when I was about 12 on an EAL DC-6 between Newark and Boston in the 1950s. I remember the day well, taking the PATH train from Manhattan to Newark Penn Station, then a bus to the airport (the old "North Terminal" made famous by People Express). There had been a massive power failure that morning affecting the terminal, and there were lots of problems and PA announcements. The best thing I remember is that the flight cost $6. Today I am not sure $6 would buy you a beer on that route  Smile

Are we talking about commercial or any flight at all? My first flight was a Piper J-3 on floats out of Crane Lake, Minnesota.........my first commercial flight was on an AA 707 out of ORD to LAX.....probably about 1960 or so.

My first flight was in 1983 on LO AN-24 from WAW to OSZ (Koszalin).
First international flight was on DL metal - WAW-PRG-FRA on 727, then FRA-CIN on L1011 and then CIN-PIT on MD80 (I think) in 93.

I was about 8 months old when I first flew. ATL-FLL and back in '89 on Eastern Air Lines. My parents were taking me down to see my grandparents for the first time. Pop Pop (my grand dad) was still in the Navy and wasn't in the area at the time.

My parents don't know what type of a/c it was but this was in June of '89.

First AIRCRAFT flight was a Hughes 300 chopper in 1968. First AIRLINER flight was a Vickers Viscount in 1969. Air Canada, YUL-YOW. Return flight was my first JET flight, DC-9.

Oh, and not sure if this counts but I also rode (flew?) on a SRN6 hovercraft in 1967 at Expo 67 in Montreal.

My first flight was when I was two weeks old. I flew from Aberdeen, SD to MSP on a Mesaba F-27 and then on to STL on a NW DC-9. My first widebody flight was when I was about a year old on a TWA L-1011 from STL to MCO.

My thoughts exactly! How do you recall equipment and reg numbers from when you were three? LOL. I've been flying since I was only a few months old, so who knows what the carriers/aircraft were. I can tell you that I had many fights from the west coast to the east and back at least twice a year. I can remember flying on some of the first 57/67 services on UA and TW from LAX. Many DC10 trips between BOS and ORD then to LAX or ONT. My first and only 747 flights on the PeopleExpress 742 service from LAX to EWR and back. Sprinkle some quick trips from ONT to DEN (Stapleton) on UA express BaE146s. I also remember a flight on a Sunaire Metroliner from ONT to LAX then YUM and back. My only PanAm experience was on BDL-BOS-MIA-MYGF. The 15 minute 727 service from MIA to MYGF was quite interesting, I don't even think we went over FL120.

The early/mid 80s experience at ONT was awesome for a aviation nut. Open gates, no jetways and a terminal with scale model aircraft. Ah, the memories.

My most memorial flights were my first trans-Atlantic ones. Oct 1998, AA MD11, N1461C from ORD to LHR. The return leg was on a 762, N316AA.

All my memories of my early flights are bundled together: I barely remember anything more specific than that. I recall walking across the aprons at EXT and BRS to board Britiannia 752s, Airtours 320s, some Spanish M80s, etc, in the early 1990s.

I never flew anywhere when I was a kid; my family always took road trips for our vacations as my parents considered flying "too expensive." I didn't take my first flight until I was 23 years old, only 6 years ago. It was RDU-ORD on an Air Wisconsin/ United Express BAe 146, where I where I connected to a UA 757 to SEA. I remember being amazed that I was in Chicago after only 2 hours, when it took us over a day of driving to get there (with a stop at a motel in the middle).

Mini me in the picture, just before my very first flight HEL-JYV in 1976   I think the plane in the picture is DC-9-51, would do you think?

My first long haul was an AY charter HEL-YVR in 1978 on DC-8, oh boy that was exiting...

Likewise, along with LTN, LGW and BHX. In fact I never remembered anything about flying from EXT - compared with PLH, NQY and BRS, which I have flown from extensively, it was always the 'oddball' which I'd never passed through by air... until recently when my family were looking to get to MAH and I mentioned that it would be good to fly from Exeter as I'd not used it before, upon which I was told that I had, and that it had been a dreadful flight on Futura Airlines. A new airline and new airport which I'd never known about - I should talk to my family more about flying  silly

My actual first flight was onboard an Air Malta B720 from LHR to MLA. I don't remember the flight and I dont remember the two week holiday over Christmas, but I was only 11 months old, so it's not really a surprise.

This is a great discussion!

My first flight was COA1610 MIA-GSO-DCA on 01JUL95 at one day short of six months old on N69351. I guess at that time I never knew how much I would value a flight on a CO 733 with them going this year! I am so happy I was able to get the reg. from BTS.org.

I was 8 months old - JL BEY-Ankara (part of complex routing that ended in MIA). June 1973.

My first really memorable flight was a TWA flight ATH-FCO-BOS - we had an extra night enroute due to a bomb scare (airline provided a hotel). This was 1977.

First flight, 1962 New York to Los Angeles, AA 707-123. Have hazy memories but that may just be my imagination.

First really remembered flight, 1971 Los Angeles to Amsterdam, Overseas National Airways DC-8-63, a charter. Loved it. I think that DC-8 is with UPS now. I know a Balair -63 I flew on a 1977 charter is with UPS (as a -73).

Many other "firsts" for me that I remember well, helicopter, light plane, corporate jet etc, but too off-topic.

Great thread.
If it's new and quiet, I don't want to fly it.

My first flight was in 1989 when I was 18 months old. It was DRW-ADL booked on AN however this was during the pilots dispute when several foreign aircraft were wet leased so I could have been on anything from JAT 733 to a Monarch 752 I think there were even a few RAAF Hercules's flying PAX

First flight I can remember was in 1994 when I was 6 it was DRW-SIN on a QF 763 can remember the flight number was QF61.

First flight was a British Airtours L1011 Tristar (not sure what marque) in 1987 LGW - NAP. We took a BIA MD83 on the same route a year later, but the first flight I really remember was ZB 752 G-MONC STN-BGR-BGI in 1990 and I got a signed postcard of the aircraft from the pilots up front during the flight  bigthumbsup  STN was a ghost town back then too...

I was 16 when I took my first flight.

August 1, 1982 PHL-FRA on a LH DC-10. I remember I was totally flabergasted when I boarded and saw it had TWO aisles! The food was good (or at least I thought it was for lack of anything to compare it to). I have to confess on the return flight I swiped one of the blankets and used it for many years afterwards.

My first flight was at age 8 on an AC (then Trans-Canada Air Lines) Vickers Viscount 724 (thus my User ID) from Edmonton (YXD airport near the city center as YEG didn't exist then) to Calgary in the summer of 1955, soon after TCA put their first Viscount into service. I remember that flight very clearly, especially the huge Viscount windows. It's probably more memorable as I was also travelling as an unaccompanied minor.

It would have looked like the first photo below as they didn't add the white top to the livery until a couple of years later. The one in the photo on the right was their first of 51 Viscounts and probably the first in service. If so, it would have been the first turbine-powered aircraft to carry revenue passengers in North America.

My very first flight was some 15 years ago with L-13 Blanik (wire launched) with my instructor. It was just amazing although very short!

My first flight with an airlines was on Czech Airlines flight PRG-BCN, possibly in 2000. It was operated by 737-500. On the way home I visited the cockpit and was excited. I may not recall the dates precisely but I will never forget the views and feelings from both flights mentioned..

I believe my first flight was from MSP to DEN-Stapelton back in the early 1990s. THe purpose of that trip was to ski. Since I was 4-6 years old, I remember very little about it. I think I flew on one of NW's 727s.
