B777 Economy Seating - Best Layout?

Sun Sep 27, 2009 8:51 pm

I was wondering who prefers which airlines economy seating configuration on the Boeing 777 aircraft...

For example most airlines have opted for the 3x3x3 which I think makes the most sense, however while I have flown with EK many time I never realised that in economy they have a 3x4x3 layout, as I am normally in Business or First. Does this not make for a confined sensation? I mean the width of the seat is close to that of some European airlines charter flights!

So, on the Boeing 777 what is best in economy? 3x3x3 2x5x2 or 3x4x3?

Hi!!

After having been on a UA 777 with 2-5-2 seating, I can only assume that 3-3-3 is not only more comfortable, but even more like a breath of fresh air when comparing.  crowded   crowded   crowded

I'm a fan of the 2-5-2. Much easier access to the aisle if in a window seat, and when on an aisle seat, only one person trying to get access to the aisle.

The only big advantage of 3x3x3 over 2x5x2 is the absence of the middle seat in the 5-abreast center section with 2x5x2 which is a nightmare with 2 people on both sides.

3x3x3 has the advantage on flights that aren't full of giving the best probability of an empty seat next to you. In flights with lighter loads it also gives more passengers the ability to fold up the armrests and use 3 seats as a makeshift bed. You can't do that with the 2-seat units in a 2x5x2 layout. 2x5x2 also means a long reach from the aisle to the overhead bins in the center section.

Airlines no doubt prefer 3x3x3 as it normally means one less underseat inflight entertainment control box, with resulting lower weight and reduced maintenance. It also means fewer different types of seat units to maintain. Very few carriers are 2x5x2 on 777s, mainly AA/UA/MH. DL was 2x5x2 originally but changed to 3x3x3. As a sidenote, it's worth noting that when KL replaced the seats on their MD-11s over the past couple of years, they went from the original 2x4x3 to 3x3x3.

Only airlines trying to generate as much Y class revenue as possible would consider 3x4x3 on a 777 as the best layout. For passengers, It's horrible and best avoided. Unfortunately, it's becoming more common on 777s other than EK's, with AF and KL having adopted it for their 777-300ERs (but, so far, not their -200ERs).

I refuse to fly Y class on any airline with 10-abreast 777s. It's noticeably more cramped than a 10-abreast 747 which is a foot wider. The aisles on a 10-abreast 777 are especially narrow, never mind the seats and armrests.

Luckily, for the airlines, not many Y class passengers fly often enough to be aware of the difference. For most of them, the only factor in choosing an airline is who has the lowest fare.

I was shocked that EK had its economy seating configured at 3x4x3 – so cramped!

I must admit for window seats the 2x5x2 must be the best, but for a good all rounder I can see why a lot of Boeing 777 airlines have used the 3x3x3 in economy – it works well for us (BA).

We're forgetting 3-4-2 which may, arguably, be the best option of all? Seat groupings for couples, groups of 3 or 4 and only one chance that you'll be two seats away from an ailse.

Egyptair offer this.. not sure about who else.

2-5-2 or the 3-4-2 is my preferred option as I am usually travelling with my other half.

I think it's all down to personal preferences or the number of people you are travelling with.

I myself prefer the 2-5-2 layout as I always managed to snag a window seat then it;s only one person to move when needing acces to the aisle.

For families of 4 or more this layout also works well with the middle 5 section

Both 2-5-2 & 3-3-3 have their merits, not keen on EK's 3-4-3 though!

Can someone familiar with CO's T7 layout advise me accordingly:
I have friends who booked IAH-AMS-LHR-IAH on CO and selected row 44, the last row w//2 seats. Does this row have full recline? Does it also have a window or is the last window blocked if the seats in row 43 are reclined? I asked them these questions to make sure they got a good choice, and now they're freaked out these are not desirable seats. Seatguru and seatexpert do not clarfy my questions and note "these are good seats if traveling with a partner."
Can a CO person, or someone who has flown in this row let me know? Thanks...I would appreciate the information.

That's not the only big advantage.

3x3x3 means that if there were 100% pax flying alone, it would take a 67% load factor in Y before anyone would have to sit next to anyone else or sit in the middle seat. And if you have a window, the middle is empty, and someone is on the aisle, it's not a true "double excuse me."

In 2x5x2, 45% LF is all it takes before anyone is forced to sit together or take a middle. But just like 3x3x3, 67% LF is all it takes until someone is forced to take a middle seat once all aisles and windows are filled, which also means that 2/3rd of the pax are already sitting shoulder to shoulder with a stranger.

Now, when couple are flying, the 2x seats are great. Families of 4 or 5 might prefer the 2x5x2 seating, either to grab the center or to take two pairs in a square.
Of all the things to worry about... the Wookie has no pants.

That is a great seating layout – could almost all it the ‘airbus’ layout ;o) 3x4x2 is better for everyone including the cabin crew who are often forgotten when talking about seating layouts (on airliners.net I mean).

I am not sure how flight attendants manage with the 2x5x2 lay out. The two seats are great but five is horrid. Trying to serve the passenger in the middle would be next to impossible without reaching across and unless you have really long arms you are going to end up having either lean over a passenger or ask for their help (passing the food or drink)...

What I hate is when I lean over a passenger to collect or serve another and then have a man check out my ‘upper female parts’ – sometimes I don’t care but when they really just stare it can make you feel a little dirty.

I still think a 2x4x2 layout even on a Boeing would be the best - however I am not sure sales and Y&I would agree!?

As a passenger and if I were to sit in economy I would be really unhappy if I was sat in the middle of the cabin on a 2x5x2 layout, horrid if you had couples each side!

I would go for the window seat (which I do away) and I would prefer a 2x4x2 layout (hence why I think with the width of the cabin, Airbus has it sorted – 2x4x2).

As a passenger I normally travel either in First or Business. I always try and get a window seat, if I don’t I try and get a aisle seat, if the cabin has a 2x3x2 layout.

I don't get your point. Why is it more difficult serving a passenger in the middle seat in the 5-abreast section ina 2x5x2 layout than a window seat passenger in a 3-3-3 layout, or any narrowbody with 3-3 seating? You have to reach across 2 passengers between you and the passenger in all those cases. The middle seat in the 5-seat section is no further away than the window seat in the 3-seat section.
