What Do You Dislike Most About Your Airport?

Tue Sep 29, 2009 5:55 pm

Most of us here have a local or regular airport, one that we either work at, fly through regularly, or spot at most. Whatever the connection, what do you hate most about the airport you frequent most often?

My airport is STN. I dislike the fact that parts of it are as shabby as they are, poorly cleaned, poorly maintained. That doesn't apply to the entire airport, parts of it are fine. However, bits of it are a disgrace. It has always seemed to me that opening shops was the overall priority at STN, above decent rest facilities and a clean environment. It has many pluses though, and overall is not a bad place to work of fly from.

So, what are your main gripes about your airport?

Mine is SLC. I hate that there are only two places to pick up luggage. If you are in D or E terminal you have a long walk to baggage claim. That and it seems to take a lot longer there for bags to start coming out than most airports.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!

Its a 75 to 80 minute drive from my garage to FNT parking lot.
Its needs to move to across the street.
NO.....NOT THE garage....the airport!

I'm only recently PIT based, so I don't have a lot to add....as for GSP though-sky high fares compared to CLT, with declining service options (we've lost Memphis (DL) and Chicago/O'Hare on Eagle, plus Minneapolis/St. Paul (NW) a few years ago).

My airport is DAB. I think every member in here knows what DAB locals want to gripe about. I will post it here anyway.

First, I try to use DAB as much as possible. In fact, the last air trip I took involved me using DAB.

Now, the venting...
There is an extreme lack of airlines servicing the airport. We went from a temporary high of four airlines down to two. As of February, 2008 DL, US, FL, and CO all had service in Daytona Beach. Over the next few months, FL and CO bailed just leaving us with DL reducing capacity and an overpriced US.

So many people are flocking to MCO (Ormond Beach southward to the Volusia/Brevard Line), and JAX (Ormond Beach northward through Flagler/Palm Coast which use MCO sometimes as well). I truly believe that if other airlines introduced new air service (B6, UA, AA, even NK) DAB would see the demand that airlines claim we don't have. FL failed because they basically over-saturated DAB-ATL; though if they kept DAB-BWI they could have done well IMO as the BWI flights were the most popular according to loads (even though full flights don't always mean profit). Daytona Beach also didn't need an extra 1-4 daily Atlanta flights (depending on the time of year) as DL already had six. 10 is overkill for DAB.

I insist that the only way to stimulate demand for DAB is for airlines to actually fly there. "If you fly here, we will come". I can understand that the new service doesn't always go over too well here, but my guess is because that we know that they will leave like the rest of them.

Two airlines that I personally think would excel here would be B6 and NK. B6 can capture the northeast traffic with nonstop(s) to JFK and NK would do extremely well not only by opening up an easy (yet cheap) link with South Florida (which would be popular), but also many links to the Carribean that even MCO doesn't have.

Whilst I fully sympathise with honest gum-chewers who dispose of their gum properly, the sheer quantity of gum mashed into carpets by careless brutes at Stansted leads me to think that a ban is not a bad idea.

IAH is my home airport. I very much dislike landing on the new north runway (8L/26R) when the airport is in a west flow. Like most airports with three parallel runways to take advantage of independent triple simultaneous ops the runway is so far away from the terminal it takes about 15 extra minutes of taxi to get to the ramps.

My home airport is SMF. Terminal B is lacking in food options particularly in the sterile area, security checkpoints are too small, windows are small, and the terminal is just generally old and outdated. They are in the process of replacing it, however.

MSP is my home airport. Can't stand that there can be some good hikes - especially if leaving out of the high G gates.

Can only imagine the pain of someone connecting from the F gates to the B gates - just not well laid out at all.

My home airport is DTW.

The thing I hate the most is when arriving at the McNamara Terminal on an inbound INTL flight, the luggage is off-loaded onto two carrousels, and you have to simultaneously check both for your luggage.

The thing I like the most is the DEMA restaurant in the Westin which is easy to access, and that the Westin has its own dedicated security into the Terminal and having never to wait for security. A really good meal, albeit expensive, and a relaxing experience before the flight.

Mine is OMA. The worst thing about it is the lack of variety in the planes/airlines that come there (though I think CO has started mainline service from IAH b/c there have been 737s there every time for the last few months- can anyone confirm?). Just the same ERJs and CRJs day after day after day (well, except for US, UA, WN, NW, and F9). Other than that, I really can't complain.

MDW is seriously lacking variety in plane types, as well as airline options. Don't get me wrong, we do get a few fun types like Q400s, 717s, and Ejets in smaller numbers, and I would rarely regret chosing WN, but compared to a few years ago when you had just as many (or more) of TZ's 738s 752s, 753s (those in particular were a joy to see), and Saabs, as well as most of the legacies (including UA and AA) flying to their other hubs with a variety of types, the mass of orange and blue today is just kind of....boring.

"MEL" Australia The now closed aircraft viewing deck which I always visited while waiting for a flight or even just to come and look at aircraft and the lack of Public transport to and from the airport. No car/taxi then your pretty much walking. Buses come with such irregularity they may aswell not be there.

Lack of activity - PER isn't great for spotters, although they do provide a viewing deck. I do wish that part of the viewing deck is open, so I don't have to take pictures through fingerprint-stained windows, or bring along a bottle of window cleaner everytime I want to take pictures.

PER international doesn't have a lot of activity, most of the movement is on the domestic side.

It isn't the cleanest airport, either. Not bad, but not to the standards of HKG or ICN.

My airports are two of them: DEN and SEA.

Starting with my natural home airport of SEA:

As much as I like the street priced food options inside security, we can't even get airline industry discount anywhere on the airport property at all. Not even my F9 ID gets me any discount whatsoever. So I still have to pay the full price no matter what.

I dislike how the majority of the airport, especially the B and D and C concourses do not have people movers like the new A concourse does, only the A concourse has the people mover at the end of the concourse   . Why is it at the end of A?!. It's a long walk no matter where you are at, except for the S and N Satellites.

The C concourse is much wider than the D is. Going through D is like trying to get through a stampede! I'm always hoping my AS flights come into C instead of D. D, sucks, sadly.

Outside of security, there is rarely any food options for people waiting for their friends and relatives coming into SEA. And there is not much of a place to sit and relax anymore.

I wished that the all of the check-in counters were set up the same way AS set up theirs. And oh.... I hate, hate, hate, HATE how the Port of Seattle screwed up the entrance to the airport if you are coming in from the South, especially from Federal Way and Tacoma via I-5 and Pacific Hwy South. The signs are confusing for a lot of people!

As for DEN:

I really dislike how the airport itself is set up as far as coming to the airport via Pena Blvd. it is like a 15 mile drive from I-70 and seems to be going on FOREVER! IMO, they positioned the airport way to far from the city and surrounding areas, it wastes a lot of gasoline!

The mass confusion stems on passenger pick up. You can pick up someone from 4-5 different floors at DEN, and it is confusing to find where exactly your party is. Ive made it a rule for someone picking me up is to meet me on the check-in curb, which is the top floor.

And that gawd awful blue Mustang statue with the lighted red eyes.....    It is so horrid & scary to even look at! Rumors have it that the statue has a curse.....

All of the concourses have the good restaurants in the middle of each concourse, or you have to take the train to another concourse for the restaurant you want to go to. But then again, the lack of time makes it impossible. There is no decent place to grab a quick bite on either ends of any of those concourses at all.

Pikes Peak Shuttle Parking. Lazy drivers, inaccurate info given, etc etc... Those people do not care. It takes FOREVER to get to your car. Lack of customer service, I tell ya! And the kicker: They raised the fee to park there per day. WTF?! (Mx personnel do not get the pink DIA parking passes as we park at the hangar while on duty...)

The circus tent. It looks cool from the outside and symbolizes the snow capped Rocky Mountains, but it is really, really cold inside of the Jeppessen terminal in the wintertime! My goodness! Thank god I don't work anywhere near that place.

The hangars. They are like a full mile away from the terminal and the concourses. Who, in their right mind, decided to build the hangars that far?! Its a task to get from the hangar to the concourses to do what you need to do. At the minimum time I have been gone in a single time, it takes me 30-40 minutes to go from the hangar area and back, round trip...including doing a simple, quick 5 minute task at the gates.

Dual taxiways. Stupid. I have to floor it to get across both taxiways on the west side of the airport. (The east side has them too, but I never go over there...)

People who drive stupidly on Pena Blvd: Excessive speeding and cutting off people, waiting on the side of the road when we have a 45 minute waiting lot, driving slow while on the cell phone.... There is no traffic enforcement around at all!

That is pretty much all I can think of....

I use all 3 NYC area airports;

JFK:
1. The Van Wyck.
2. The mandatory hour long guided tour (taxi) before take off between the hours of 5.00 PM to 10.00 PM.
3. The complete lack of decent restaurants in terminals 4 & 7

LGA:
1. The runways are so short you can hear the fight crew's sigh of relief from the cockpit upon completion of landing.
2. Its so small & conjested that if anything goes wrong on the airfield everything gets backed up for at least an hour.
3. The complete lack of even one decent restaurant.

EWR:
1. The "beautiful aroma" that invades you car on the Meadowlands section of the NJ Turnpike.

Last July, connected through MSP one Sunday evening with my 11-year-old daughter from a high F gate to A2. Inbound flight from ORD was late-arriving, so our connection time was compressed. We made it, and the train helped shorten the actual walking time. Two days before, she and I transited through there from A-2 to a high G.

My home airport now is SGF. Frankly, everything I complained about the old terminal was corrected in the new terminal. It would be better to have more non-stop options and lower fares, but I'm a realist about our O&D.

Mine is SFO. It's a pretty nice airport, if you leave the bewildering driving destructions that they give you while you're trying to figure which of the can-of-worms of ramps to take.

The criss-cross runways that can't handle fog are another downer. You are sitting in beautiful sunny weather in SAN and you can almost taste San Francisco, you're so excited to get home. And 2 hour delay because of fog in SF. *facepalm*

By contrast, At DTW, they blithely take off and land in raging blizzards.

My airport is NWI and I hate the fact that the airport introduced a "passenger development fee" that passengers must pay at the airport in cash (or by card) before flying. I've nothing against the extra fee / tax etc, but I really wish it was included in the taxes that are paid with the ticket price.

I also use STN quite a lot, and my only real gripe (apart from its distence from my home!) is that you can end up waiting for ages for a long stay car park shuttle bus to arrive, and when it does the queue of people still doesn't all fit into it.

I'm near LGW and I don't like the way it is more like a shopping centre than an airport, on both sides of security.

When I get to an airport all I want to do is maybe browse the duty free and pick up a paper then relax ready for departure.

LGW is also not spotter friendly. There used to be a place to spot in the North Terminal airside but they soon got rid of that for.....more shops!
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

OOL, the lack of air bridges and a proper terminal
(although I understand why it is like it is). Also the lack of variety, its only DJ, TR, JQ, D7 and NZ. It would be nice to see a few more airlines, but in terms of movements there are plenty. Also, to clean up the hangars and that general area.

Mine is ATL. I really dislike the fact that arrivals and departures are on the same level. Makes for very crowded conditions. US airports should take a look at most Asian airports as they separate arrivals and departures onto different floors. Provides for much better pedestrian flow.

Agreed!

Another thing that annoys me is the airport tax for BART riders.
After 30+ years of fighting bureaucracy and environmentalist, BART finally connects with SFO. However, it's like an extra $5 or $6 to get off at SFO.
The extra cost to ride to SFO on BART defeats the purpose of riding BART.
It cost $23.00 round trip from San Francisco to SFO on BART.
Makes a lot more sense to drive if that's an option.

Depends on a few things. If you happen to have a car, the cheapest thing to do is to have your partner drop you off and pick you up.

If you are driving your own car, then you have to long-term park it, and that's never less than $9/day. So if you are going anywhere for more than 2 days, then BART does become competitive. Shuttles are about twice as expensive and taxis are about four times as expensive.

The main problem is the short runway and the awful weather conditions we get - it can be fogged in for days. Some more routes would be nice too  yes

For those of us here in the Sunset district, it takes 2 hours to get to SFO using MUNI 7 BART and is only 10 miles away.
Super-Shuttle used to be a good alternative but now they give a tour of the entire city mixing up passengers from all over the city. That now takes almost 2 hours and cost like $25.00.
A taxi will get you there in 20 minutes but will cost $50.00.
The best way to get there is to get a ride from someone else.

I don't mind having OAK as my home airport. It's 10 minutes away from my house, and there are plenty of Southwest flights to choose from. However, if you're going somewhere that isn't served by Southwest (like Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, where some of my family lives), you can either pay premium fares to fly DL/UA, or commute to SJC or SFO to find a decent ticket price. If I leave from work, I have to take BART to the Coliseum and transfer to the AirBART, and that can be a hassle. Plus, there's no real place to spot/take pictures when you're waiting inside the terminals.

Also, if I have to commute to SFO, I either get a ride and pay the $4 toll, or take BART from Fruitvale or West Oakland. If I can't get a ride, I'd rather take BART and pay the $8.30 one way fare from West Oakland or $8.65 from Fruitvale.

OK...I have two DFW and SNA.

SNA

I have no real gripes, other than the lack of aircraft...bunch of A320s/737s/CRJ/ERJ. But the general aviation there kind of makes up for it. (The departures fly over my house in Newport Beach, but I never complain  Smile

DFW

Terminals A, C, E are all showing some age...and to a lesser extent...B. D is obviously in impeccable shape. They seem to have a plan to fix that though, so more power to them. The multiple terminals can be an issue for parking, so I have found it is better to park at the Express North lot for less, and ride the bus.

ok...one more actually...

PRC

I go to school at Embry-Riddle. Horizon has a nice service to LAX (through FLG). Great Lakes has 2 flights to ONT and one to DEN through FMN. Not too bad for PRC arizona, anywhere else, it is a nice hour and a half drive to PHX. My gripe...I want direct AA flights to DFW Big grin
