Finding Better Prices For SFO To WDH (Namib

Sat Oct 24, 2009 6:53 am

Searching for roundtrip flights from SFO to WDH online I can only come up with outrageously expensive flights in the $3200 - $5000 range. What is the best way to purchase tickets for such an uncommon route? Would a travel agency specializing in Africa be able to get a much better price?

Edit: I'm looking at the time frame of late June 2010.

It may be easier to book tickets separately, SFO - JNB then JNB - WDH. Or even SFO - NYC, then separately NYC - JNB. This may lower the price somewhat, or better yet wait until the sales in January before booking.

I would suggest you to route yourself via Europe, then it should be much cheaper. As you did not say when exactly you would like to travel, I did some research for 1H February 2010 and here are a few options:
- you can get from SFO to MUC for around $850 and then AB would take you to WDH for roughly €600
- another more expensive option is to get to FRA for around $760 and then use SW to WDH for around €1,000
- if you fly BA via LHR and JNB it will be a total of roughly $2,200

An alternative would be to get yourself to JFK or IAD for around $250 and then fly SA via JBN for less than $1,400.

Hope that helped.

One reason for the sky high fares, during your intended travel date (end of June 2010), is the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup in South Africa. The tournament runs from June 11, 2010 until July 11, 2010.

Chances are that you may well find significant cheaper fares before and after the World Cup.

Besides all the good advice provided by Signol and Mickster, you can also explore the option of flying with Kulula.com between JNB-WDH-JNB. They are a local LCC.

Should you have any further questions, feel free to ask.  Smile

Quoting Mickster (Reply 2):

I fly from the USA to Windhoek about every 4-6 months, and my route changes based on fares, but here are some ideas:

-You live are traveling out of a Star Alliance hub. Fly to another S.A. hub, FRA, and connect on to SW as mentioned. This is what I do the majority of the time (albeit it AA to FRA because I don't like UA or LH very much)

-The thing I do second most is to via Washington DC and on to SAA to JNB. From there, I'll connect on to whomever is cheaper, be it SAA or Air Namibia or someone else, to WDH

-Once, I was amazed to find the cheapest was to do an LAX-HKG-JNB flight on CX and then connect on to SW in JNB. That was once, and I've never seen it again, but it was...different...and probably the most enjoyable/comfortable despite the longer distance

Just a heads up a did a search for SFO-JNB in late June and actually found a deal for US$1800 SFO-JFK-CAI-JNB on Egyptair and codeshare. A cheap flight from JNB-WDH won't set you back much from there.

I can think of SFO-DXB-JNB or CPT-WDH

Emirates are cheaper then most other long-haul carriers, although I am not sure for their USA flights.
