Help On US Flight; SLC-ORD-CLT-FRA

Wed Oct 28, 2009 11:22 pm

So i think im the biggest moron in the history of travel. I found a round trip ticket to FRA for 400 on US; despite US being the worst airline in the US in terms of service and just about everything else, the price was right. I however didnt realize untill after purchasing the ticket, that i have 1hr 20 min to catch my flight to CLT from ORD; and i have never been to ORD. the flight to ORD is actually on UA operated by SkyWest, and after following its stauts for the last few days have found out it regularly leave 1-2hrs late  Angry Its US 7682. the flight to CLT usually leaves on time US 1823, but if i miss my flight, i will probably miss my flight to FRA, because i only have 1 hr to connect in CLT. If i miss the CLT flight, im pretty sure there are no later night time flights to FRA anywhere on the East Coast by any other airline...so i just realized in all actuality, i got hosed by US...they sold me an itinerary that they should have known has a very low likely hood for me to make, given their crappy ontime performance. The ticket is partially refundable, so i was wondering, should i cancel it? Its on nov 25th, so im not sure the weather will hold in SLC or ORD, i dont know if US will rebook me to get to FRA if i miss my connection in ORD, or if they will leave me stranded, and i may not have a hotel if i get a day late to FRA...does anyone have any suggestions? Does US normally rebook passengers if the miss connections? Would they be able to get me to FRA if i miss the ORD-CLT segment? I really want to go to FRA and the price was really good, but since it seems the likely hood of getting there on time is low, i dont know if i should just cancel? Any tips or suggestions? the connection times suck.

Any help AT ALL would be appreciated.

I definitely see your concern! Obviously I'm sure you know that if you were to miss your flight because of a late flight, you would be given accommodations, of course this would not work if you had to be in Frankfurt for something like a meeting or so on. Yes, you would be put on the first available flight in the morning by the way. If you are willing to take the risk of having to stay the night in Charlotte, CLT is probably one of the best airports to use if you have a tight connection, even though the E concourse is quite a long walk from concourse D. Best of luck!

p.s. Enjoy the A330-300, it is actually fairly nice.  Silly

If a delay incurs on your departure from SLC, speak with the UA staff there about the possibility of a missed connection. Don't get on a delayed flight in SLC assuming ORD will deal with it. Know your options if a delay occurs before you board. I'd ask for re-book on a UA flight to FRA via ORD or IAD or a re-book on US via PHL if a connection exists.
You'll pay a change fee is you ask US to re-book your flights now, and certainly don't cancel and absorb a penalty fee and end up starting all over again to book new flights to FRA.
Every airline experiences flight delays, so US is not "hosing" you by selling what is a legitimate connection with their codeshare partner UA. Every airline expects to operate a flight on-time and safely, and many factors affect a flights performance. I'm not excusing SkyWest's apparent delayed record on this segment, but I think you'll find UA people in SLC and ORD more than willing to help get you to FRA should a delay result in a missed connection. US will do the same. Keep their International Reservations # (800 622-1015) handy to call if you need help beyond what UA is offering you.
Think positive your trip will go smoothly, and ask for help along the way if things go astray. Keep your cool, be courteous and not shy in asking for help. A big smile and a genuine "Can you help me?" will go a long way in resolving a potential problem.
Enjoy a beer and some pretzel bread for me in Germany! Good Luck with your trip.
watch what you want. you may get it.

If 7862 is constantly late because the outbound aircraft is delayed out of ORD, then there's a pretty good chance that your ORD-CLT flight will also be delayed if 7862 is delayed. ORD delays are equal-opportunity.

Well i hope it goes well. Im not sure if US is willing to rebook me the same day from ORD on another airline, if i miss my flight to CLT...that would be the best option, and the least inconvenient, so i doubt they would do that. US is all about passenger inconvenience...

Wait... so it's Skywest operating for UA that can't get it right, but somehow it's US's fault?

I made the mistake of trying to connect through ORD once. I figured with a 2.5 hour layover I was good.

While it's good to start with this in SLC, make sure you have plenty of time for them to rebook you. Because it's on US ticket stock, UA will have to call the US guys to release control of the ticket. In a major station this is usually no problem, but a small regional outstation like SLC will probably be transferred 2 or 3 times.

The actual changing won't be hard, it's just getting hold of the right people.
