What Is The Longest Domestic Flight In The World?

Fri Oct 30, 2009 6:26 pm

I was just reading about CDG-PPT in the other forum and that some of you consider this one as a domestic flight (going down in LAX though). Brought me to the question if CDG-PPT is the world longest domestic flight, from the pov in distance and time?!

What other long domestic flights like this can you name? I m very interested in this. Thank you in advance.

If you stayed over a single landmass, it would almost have to be Russian. There are flights scheduled between, for example, St. Petersburg and Vladivostok, although I don't know if they're non-stop. A bit shorter would be VVO to Moscow (cheap too - Travelocity is listing a non-stop round-trip from VVO to SVO in December* at $273!), which still would beat anything possible over a single landmass in any other country.

More complex would be something like EWR-HNL. That's longer than VVO-SVO, and is certainly domestic (and Continental is flying a non-stop). Then there's the question about how to treat dependencies (for example, would a flight from London to the Falkands be domestic or not - not that such a thing appears to be available).

*Of course why anyone would want to be in either Moscow or Vladivostok in December is beyond me.  duck

The longest nonstop domestic I can think of right off the top of my head is CO's EWR-HNL at 4,962 miles flown on a 764ER.

Just to put some numbers on it (from Great Circle Mapper):

EWR (40°41'33"N 74°10'07"W) HNL (21°19'07"N 157°55'21"W) 282° (W) 4312 nm
UUS (46°53'19"N 142°43'03"E) SVO (55°58'22"N 37°24'53"E) 321° (NW) 3597 nm
VVO (43°23'56"N 132°08'53"E) SVO (55°58'22"N 37°24'53"E) 318° (NW) 3468 nm

Air France and Air Austral serve flights between Paris and Réunion, which should be around 10 000 kilometres. Réunion is also the southern- and easternmost point of the EU, just off the coast of Madagascar.

As OV735 saysI think Paris-Réunion takes the prize. CDG-RUN is 5809 nm in the great circle route. There are direct flights.

I think you would have to divide into two categories. Hawaii and Réunion are fully part of their respective countries, with the same conditions as other parts of the country. A place like Puerto Rico, on the other hand, is a dependency and thus different.

With the dependency argument pointed out by others, I personally wouldn't count the GUM flight.

So, looks like CDG-RUN wins out (it's nonstop too)...unless someone else can top that.  Smile

If you did count dependencies, and thus IAH-GUM, I'm pretty sure CDG-PPT would still be longer.

Indeed...according to gc.kls2.com the distances are:

IAH-HNL 3904m
HNL-GUM 3801m
Total 7705m

CDG-LAX 5669m
LAX-PPT 4095m
Total 9765m

No, I think the longest direct flight (with intermediate stops), counting territories and dependencies, would then be Air Austral's twice-weekly 777-200ER service between Paris and Noumea, New Caledonia with stops at Reunion (their home base) and Sydney. That's about 30% further than CDG-LAX-PPT.

CDG-RUN 5798mi
RUN-SYD 5741mi
SYD-NOU 1230mi
Total 12780mi

That must also be one of the longest direct flights in elapsed time, 27 hr. 50 min. eastbound and 30 hr. 30 min. westbound.

Both EWR and ORD are longer to HNL than from IAH.

According to the European Unions official website, Reunion is not included as part of the EU – nor governed by its laws or regulations – however it is governed by France and its domestic laws etc.

It’s the same as the Falkland Islands are not part of the EU...

Ps. I don’t understand why they are not, I am just going by the official website/s...

Reunion is a territory of the EU and is part of the Eurozone.

Reunion would indeed be part of the EU since it is just as much a part of France as Paris.

Sometimes the flight goes via Mayotte, which is a French dependency but not part of France.
Paris - Cayenne (in French Guiana) is also a very long domestic flight (4416). Same goes for Paris - Guadaloupe and Martinique.

Soon (maybe months or years...) the island of Bonair would be integrated as a part of Netherlands, which would make Amsterdam - Bonair also a very long flight (4844 mi)

Moscow - Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky is 4224.

Don't forget the twice weekly flight from BZZ to MPN (6834 nm) operated with Lockheed L10 Tristar or Boeing 767 wet-leased from Flyglobespan.

Is not a direct flight due a short stop in Ascension Island.

Do you need a passport to travel from the UK to the Falkands?

Yes, because Falklands are not in the same customs zone as UK (only UK, Isle of Man and Channel Islands are). I am not sure if military does a passport check-up. You also have to have a special permission from the gov´t.

You also have a passport check between France and Reunion. There is no passport control between CPH and Nuuk, and also between Russian east and west.

You probably mean Kangerlussuaq (SFJ), formerly Sondre Stromfjord, which is the destination of flights from CPH to Greenland. The 3100 ft. runway at Greenland's capital, Nuuk (GOH), is too short for jets. Air Greenland Dash 7s operate the 172 nm sector SFJ-GOH, connecting with their A332 flights to/from CPH.

Yep, thanks for correcting me.
However I forgot to say that Greenland is an overseas territory of Denmark, rather then an integral part, thus we cant consider CPH-SFJ to be a domestic flight.
