I have done this route many many times, majority of those flights on DJ
(Virgin Blue), a couple on QF
and never on Jetstar.
Unless you are doing the Great Ocean Road or visiting Geelong/Eastern Victoria or would like to experience abysmal comfort and service, you don't want to be flying Jetstar. The trip from Avalon to Melbourne CBD is around 1 1/2 hours on the transfer bus.
I would definitely fly Virgin Blue. Tullamarine is easy to get to from the CBD via taxi or bus from Southern Cross Station, there is a multitude of food/beverage and retail outlets throughout the whole airport and something else that sets Tulla (and DJ
) apart from Avalon and JQ
is the use of aerobridges and that DJ
has 'The Lounge'.
usually use a 737-700 on the route with the occassional -800. Honestly there isn't a great deal of difference between DJ
unless you fly in the afternoon on weekdays and like a drink (as there is a free bar on CityFlyer flights on QF
) or collect OneWorld FF
If you really wanted to try JQ
you could fly MEL
and you'd probably get on one of their new A321's, but then you have at least a 1 1/2 transit from OOL
to Brisbane CBD via bus and train.
You can always get the Countrylink XPT from Melbourne to Brisbane, but you have to transit Sydney Central Station and it takes a very long time and is more expensive than flying!
Enjoy your trip, hope you enjoy Melbourne and Brisbane, my two favourite Australian cities
I'm happy to answer any other questions you have as well.
