Best Way To HKT (Phuket)

Sat Nov 21, 2009 4:04 pm

I was wondering which is the best way to get to HKT - I am looking to vacation there. I live in NYC...
I have travel benefits on NW/DL so that is preferred (I can go J class). Zone fares the rest of the way...
Thanks  Wink

EWR-SIN-HKT (SQ/MI) (If its within your budget) is what I would pick.
You can also go JFK - ICN (OZ) /NRT (NH/JL/TG) /HKG (CX/KA) - HKT.

What do you think about HongKong?! Either non-stop from there with AIR ASIA to Phuket or via BKK with ORIENT THAI B747classic, EMIRATES, ETHIOPIAN, RoyalJordanian (A310!), SriLankan etc. - (1-2-days stop-over BKK   ) and onwards with NOK AIR, 1-2-go! or AIR ASIA.

Just got back from a 2 week trip to Thailand. Flew Nok Air (Nok is bird in Thai it seems), and has a good experience. I was afraid of a Ryan Air type operation of unheard or fine print charges, but can reccomend the airline based on my three flights with them.

I am US based and paid with a credit card and feel they were a very good value.

Cheers!

PS> Phuket city was VERY unremarkable, you're braver than I if you rent a moped, and Ko Phi Phi was amazing! It's worth it! the NW/DL flights were fairly full, but I had the United option and flew F/J for 3/4 long flights...

NW to NRT and BKK, then either TG or another carrier to HKT. Been a while since I've been to HKT, but I do ORD-BKK (via EWR) frequently. Just returned from a similar trip 4 days ago.

If you have World Club priviliges, NRT has a great club--several of them actually. If you're traveling F or J, just watch the food and beer machine--you need to save room for that in flight meal!

Another option would be through HKG, then BKK. The HKG-BKK flight is a bit over 2 hours, where the NRT-BKK flight is about 5.5 hours.

You should have zonal fares on TG and they treat us pretty well. You should also be able to buy a domestic r/t ticket from BKK or DMK to HKT for around $100 with advance purchase.

Hey, if u still need info, call me!

You can do KE 1 stop through ICN from JFK. Keep in mind it is only like 4 or 5 times a week and the arrival to HKT is like 1245am and the departure is like 2 am!

Also...

If you arrive in HKT without a hotel reservation, the shuttle van driver--if you use one--will likely tell you that all the hotels are full and attempt to get you into a hotel they sell for. I highly doubt that ALL the hotels have been full during the last few years! The van usually stops at a travel agency on the way into town and spends anywhee from 10-30 or more minutes there, so you might be better with a taxi. If you use the van, make sure the driver knows you DON'T need a hotel and that you don't want to stop at the travel agency.

I have no idea what your hotel expectations are, but you should be able to find rooms from $30 US to more than $1,000 US. There are several small hotels located a block or two from the beach that will probably cost around $30-$40 or less. Best solution might be to book a room through the internet for the first night, then find a better room the following day for the rest of your stay.

Main tourist area is Patong Beach, but if you're not into the night life scene, better accommodations can be found in some of the quieter areas, like Kata beach.

FWIW, in Patong there is a bakery (Khun Woody's Bakery) and sandwich shop (The Sandwich Shoppe) owned in part by Woody Leonhard. Woody is the author of the 9-in-1 book "Windows Vista for Dummies" Although I haven't personally met Woody yet, I believe his longtime girlfriend was the best friend of a girl I dated during my earlier trips to Thailand! I hope to be able to get down to see them during one of my trips next year.

I love their awesome livery and I think their product is much better than Air Asia!

1-2-go!

Isn't their fleet parked at BKK and the airline on EU blacklist?
