Best Place To Sleep At Stansted?

Sat Nov 21, 2009 10:12 pm

Hello!

Myself and a couple of friends are flying out of STN next saturday on a 6:45am flight to Norway (and returning same day... gotta love super-cheap Ryanair daytrips!)

We were thinking about driving to Stansted the evening before the flight and trying to catch a bit of sleep somewhere before going through security... can anyone recommend any place which is good for sleeping (if any!) ? Is security a problem?

Also, is it possible at all to go through security the night before and sleep somewhere in the departure lounge?

Thanks for any help!

Stansted is packed at night, it's really quite an odd sight. Security don't bother you at all, but you'll be very hard pushed to get a seat and it's even difficult to get a place infront of a check in counter - there are literally hundreds of people there each night roughing it. Last time I did it I was with fellow A.nutter Birdwatching and we pitched his tent out by one of the roundabouts and slept in that, but the time before I've ended up grabbing 40 winks on the floor beneath the flight departures signs. The heat from all the TVs is surprisingly useful... and I know that makes me sound like a bum, but it's only for a maximum of 6 hours so why pay for a hotel? Big grin As far as I know it's not possible to sleep airside.

Hahaha I love the tent idea... what did you do with it the next morning? Might consider it, though it the weather's anything like it is at the moment... maybe not!

Probably going to take a sleeping bag... would there be anywhere I can leave it at STN and pick it up that night on the way home?

Packed it up in a rucksack and flew with is as hand luggage. Security were fine with it, even the pegs.

They have a left luggage facility, but it would probably cost quite a bit. Maybe send someone back to the car with the sleeping bags, or sleep in the car if it's going to be somewhere nearbye?

Maybe it would be a good idea to sleep in your car then. At least then you can control the heating/ventilation and keep your valuables safe.

The coaches from London to Stansted are pretty cheap and run all night. Why not stay in your own bed and catch a bus during the night?
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Thanks guys, I'll be doing one of these... though when it gets a tad warmer/drier, I'm definitely planning to dig out the old LIDL tent for a future STN escapade!

Yes - the SAS Radisson or the Hilton. Take your pick.  biggrin

Alternatively, find yourself any number of corners in the terminal and join the nightly refugee camp that is London Stansted. Security isn't really a problem. The place is pretty active all night.

In my younger days, I slept within the terminal at STN on several occasions.

I slept there the last time I flew from STN (to KUL). Fantastic place! And my room had a brilliant view over an certain airline's ramp...  Silly

Same. Just take something soft for underneath, and some water because you always seem to wake up with a really dry mouth! Chances are you'll be woken by 3am ish by the noise of people who haven't slept over, arriving.

You can also pay £5 for a shower which I thought would be grim but was actually really clean, as was the towel.

If you ask me, the best £68 you'll ever spend!
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

Ditto. The Radisson really is convenient (as are those at ZRH and OSL; never tried the one at ARN yet)..
My only complaint (at STN) was a lengthy wait at check-in.
