Any More Mileage Millionaires Out There?

Sun Nov 22, 2009 2:16 am

Interesting article on the "art" of accumulating frequent flier miles. Also pay attention to the posted comments after the story is done. Though many people who posted knew what they were talking about, there were quite a few people who just seemed to be showing sour grapes...

Thoughts?

Sadly I'm only at 600k lifetime Delta miles (though I'm only 24). Combine all my programs though and I'm probably at a million miles overall lifetime.

Miles themselves aren't that hard to come by - this year, between programs I'll end up racking up somewhere around 600k miles between Delta, United and Continental - and only one trip this year has been paid for by someone other than myself (and that was a trip to FLL, which netted me around 6000 miles when it was all said and done). Being aware (and exploiting) various promos can lead to incredibly easy miles that go into the bucket. Of course, flying helps (I will have flown over 100k miles this year), but it's only part of the equation.

I don't have quite the mileage and FF account balance that those guys have, but I know the pleasures of which they speak. Last Christmas vacation I took the family (4 people) BOS-HKG (via ORD) business class on UA on FF miles. Good stuff!

The quest for mileage is always an interesting one.

Not a million-miler here, but I'm more concerned with Elite level vs. total mileage.

I am a lifetime DL Platinum (over 4,000,000 base miles) and already Diamond for next year, plus have another bunch of miles at CO ...

If you are offered the miles, you take them -- simple as that. It has also been said that miles should be used, not stored, but I find a balance in saving and using -- they are a form or currency, and thus I am looking forward to a 1st class RTW sometime in the future, with a companion.

When DL filed 11, all my friends stated "of course your miles are toast now!". Nope. No problem! When Eastern shutdown I had the same reaction, but my miles simply transferred to CO (along with life time President's Club).

I find the estimate of 300,000 "mileage millionaires" somewhat low, though. Seems everybody I sit with on DL is a million miler (and I have done 150+ flights so far this year).

My screen name says it all ....
I love to fly, and it shows!

I suspect I've comfortably earned more than a million miles in BA Executive Club since I joined back in 2002 and my wife who has been a member for five years is probably very close. (but there's no lifetime tally kept like in other schemes). It's not hard as there are so many ways to earn frequent flyer miles besides getting on an aircraft especially in the more mainstream schemes.

Got to love the environmentalist/carbon footprint crowd getting in with their nonsensical drivel  Yeah sure

I have 1,600,000 on Northwest which I stopped flying during the mechanics strike.

But I'm now 1K on United. Big grin
