Terminal 5 At ORD

Hi all,

I am connecting at ORD from a domestic UA flight (arriving at terminal 1) to SK to CPH leaving from Terminal 5. First off, I was a bit shocked that I had to leave security (but I am actually used to this at LAX from where I fly most of the time). This is really inconvenient and that's probably why LH moved in with UA in T1. SK should do the same.

Still, I am a bit shocked about the situation at T5 -- the building is nice and rather modern, but there are no bars/food places/stores inside security! Just nothing. And outside security, the places are not that great either (plastic cups instead of glasses in the single bar they have).

Are there any plans for improvement/upgrades to T5? Could there ever be sterile connections between T5 and domestic terminals (e.g., via busses?).

Only departures I believe. IB also departs from the AA terminal.

That is the way I like it since if I am dropping someone off (or being dropped off) I can eat with them before parting ways. And since you must be outside of security anyway how is it an issue?

There is a McDonald's on the lower level outside of the exit from customs.
Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

You will find that security is pretty quick so there is no reason to hang inside security longer than you need to...

If you look at the O'Hare modernization plan there are plans for a Terminal 6 that would connect on the East end of Terminal 5. They also have plans for an underground people mover to connect Terminal 5 with Terminal 2/1 and the future west Terminal complex.

The proposed plan would also include Terminal 4 with customs for AA. You can look it up online if you like. Most of the terminal enhancements are market dependent and are independent of the runway work. O'Hare will be quite the airport when all is said and done. When that will be is still up in the air though.
One mile of highway gets you one mile, one mile of runway gets you anywhere.

Well, T5 has been a source of major headache for O'Hare for a while and, unfortunately, many of its problems are, simply put, unfixable. To start with, it is poorly designed - the entire departure traffic is funneled through a single bottleneck which could not have been a great problem before TSA security, but certainly is now. The design also means that a passenger has to walk for what feels like miles to or from the furthest gates. To add insult to the injury, the terminal is far away from domestic terminals and separated from them by two taxiways – all of which makes a bus connection all the more difficult (and no, as far as I know, ORD is not planning one).

Now, a dedicated terminal for international flights in Chicago also inevitably means that it is used very unevenly throughout the day with departure area overcrowded mid-afternoon through early evening (with departure of European and Middle Eastern flights) and virtually empty the rest of the day/night. That does not bode well for restaurants, duty free shops, etc.

Just an FYI, the international terminal has always been the way it is now with only passengers allowed beyond security. I remember traveling through there in 1999 and thinking it was rather odd that they did it this way.

There's two McDonalds'; one on the departures level and one on arrivals, both outside the secure area.

 checkmark  Definately. It seemed a waste not so long ago when terminals 1, 2 and 3 were were running at capacity and new airlines (VX) had trouble obtaining slots etc. while many gates at T5 were vacent at key times of the day. Don't know what the story is now regarding slots at T1/T2/T3 since UA/AA decreased flights...
