Annoying Southwest Baggage Commericals

Mon Nov 30, 2009 12:00 am

Is it just me, is there anyone else that can't stand those patronizing, fake and insincere commercials starring their ground staff? The notion that their bags fly for free is fine, but the execution of the commercials, complete with the fake sentimentality by the "actors" posing as ground staff rubs me wrong. I hate that commercial. Its one of those reverse-psychology tactics, creating a fake situation to point out something about a competitor. Yes, your bags are free, but your commercial is insulting! Anyone else? Or is it just me?

Huh? I get fake, it's a commercial, but how is it patronizing or insincere?

So you're criticizing that they use actors in a commercial? What about the 99% of other commercials that use actors?

The commercials are not my favorite, but I guess I don't get enraged by them like you do. It's a commercial, plain and simple. Marketing is all about making the consumer choose your product over a competitor's, and that is what WN is doing here. They are pointing out a very real fact that they are just about the only airline in the US offering free baggage, and that's the whole point of the commercial. It does it effectively.

I suppose I find it patronizing to the audience watching, because the entire exercise rings so false with me. The fake crying, fake sentimentality, really bad acting. I suppose Southwest is trying to play up the blue-collar aspect, but crying over checked bags is just too much. For me...

And oh gosh! I hope they are actors. Or that would be so embarrassing to the actual baggage handlers!

I don't mind the commercials. I think it's typical WN attitude and it doesn't hurt anyone as long as it's some good, healthy, competitive advertising. You want annoying and fake?

Watch this I'm sure it's not Southwest official ad but it did annoy the hell out of me and wanted my almost three minutes back!

Kind regards,

yawn, yet another F.U. Southwest post.

no, I actualy don't find them bad at all. Doesn't seem to really get across the brand or the point as well as it should IMO, but they are different from the normal so thats good atleast.

Well, I suspect Southwest is trying to be cute, and maybe they are appealing to a different audience. But to me, the ad rings false, and I wonder what customer they are going after. I'm not anti-Southwest, but are they trying to win over customers who don't want to travel where they fly? And I don't see this as another F.U. Southwest post, just trying to be enlightened on the appeal of what I consider to be a manipulative ad.

Commercials especially by large companies are rarely released blindly.

It very likely the Southwest commercial was viewed by multiple test audiences and scored well with the target group and carried the message the carrier was trying to convey.

I don't particularly enjoy the ads (especially since Southwest doesn't fly anywhere near where I live), but I also think they're probably very effective. The ads are certainly unique enough to be memorable, and I think a lot of people will respond to the message about the bag fees. Let's face it, most of us book our flights with a top priority of getting the lowest fare possible, and while Southwest's lack of bag check fees don't automatically make them the lowest price option, it can certainly help a lot especially if you are traveling with your family with multiple checked bags.

I'm part of the formidble competition FL so of course, I find those commercials stupid. I like ours better especially the one about the age of our planes. But what makes me want to hurl are 99.9% of the Christmas commercials. Sorry if I'm flying off course here but, to me almost all the Christmas commercials are trite, patronizing and take us the consumer for granted. I especially hate the ones where carrolers sing a line to each stupid customer's shopping/gifting dilemmas. Best Buy and Chevrolet come to mind and they make the WN commercials almost cool beans in comparison. And, I hate those Gap commercials where dancers do cheer/dance routines with XMAS bells. Give me a f&*(ing break please. And referring to Radio Shack as 'HE SHACK re-damn diculous!

I don't like them either also...I'm not a huge WN fan so maybe that explains it....

As a baggage handler, I consider that an insult to my work group. Do you honestly think they'd do it if it was embarrassing?

So I guess your answer is no. That's fine, everyone has their opinions. But you should have left the smart-ass attitude and rudeness out of your post.

Actually, the problem is they don't entertain me. They annoy me. ESPECIALLY the "free, free, free, free, free..." jerk. They do communicate their point, but they actually make me less likely to fly Southwest, all other things being equal. Since I don't like Southwest to begin with, it probably doesn't matter that much.)

(And since I get a free bag on JetBlue, or two free bags on CO thanks to the Presidential Plus MasterCard, the free bags themselves aren't really much of a draw.)

Not since getting laid off, my mileage for 2009 will be half of 2008.
I actually meant to get rid of the PresPlus card this year, but forgot the renewal date.

I do agree with you that the ads get the point across.
I don't agree that they're entertaining, "entertaining" and "annoying" are mutually exclusive.

The WN ads always seem to come on when I'm in the kitchen, out of remote range!  Silly
I don't mind the Progressive ads, the campaign is tired but not that bad...sort of like "Rhapsody in Blue" for UA.

You mean you have the Hatorade for Flo? She's a looker and I for one would tap that if I could.  rotfl
