The title says it all. Wikipedia says 'al-'itihad.....is that correct?

Depends on how you read it- the correct Arabic pronounciation should be:

al ittihad (note the stress on the 't').

Is it correct that you have to pronounce the "h" more like "ch" (similiar to how Swiss people talk)? I don't know how to describe it correctly but I often noticed that the "h" in Arabic sounds as if you are a strong smoker.

On my last flight with Etihad, the captain announced it as "ate-he-had" and the first officer announced it as "eat-he-had"... so take your pick!

Just give reservations a quick call...see how the recorded message says it and there you go! Unless even this pronounces it wrongly...!

As Mr. Directorguy rightfully pointed out, it really should be al ittihad (with a stress on the t, and if you can, coarsen up the h). Arabs usually pronouce it that way.

Non-Arabs usually just say Etihad (Ety-Had), which i guess is also correct.

And it means "union" or "federation", ie that of the 7 emirates composing the UAE. "United" would have been muttahida.

Yup. The h would be like the hard 'h' -the 'ahhhh' sound you make after taking a swig of iced Cola on a hot summer's day' . Examples are Ahmed, Hamas, humus, Hezbollah etc. But it's not as sharp as the 'ch' sound like in Chaim, Menachem etc.

Worth pointing out something I noticed-dunno if it's a coincidence though:

United- Etihad Airline uses the Arabic word for 'United' and Abu Dhabi's airline
Arab-The airline of Sharjah is Air Arabia
Emirates-Emirates, largest of the trio, is the airline of Dubai

There is no letter in the English alphabet for the correct pronunciation of Etihad. The H is used since it is the closest sounding letter to what it should be.

Best way I could think of to explain it is to let you listen to it, so here's the link

http://dilap.eu/arabic-alphabet/ha.html

Click on the "Sound" link under the letter. The correct pronunciation is Ettihad (Et-ti-had, with the "ha" part as shown above).

WOW! I guess I'm not the only one confused by it.

I guess I'll just refer to them as "that carrier whose brand new A340 was trashed before delivery". (Might even be a few less syllables....)

I pronouce it like my friend from Abu Dhabi taught me to. It involves the hard H at the back of the throat. Someone in NA may liken it to a throat clearing noise combined with the letter H.

I am about 10 days away from hearing the captain or FA speak the word Etihad to my ears for the first time on an A346, just excited to try a new airline and see the world.

On the phone, their reservations made it sound like eeh te hhad.

However you pronounce it, I can't wait to try out their product  Smile

Or how about the airline with great new aircraft, great inflight service, but poor customer service unless you're a premium flyer.

Lucky you you will have a great experience. Have a safe trip, enjoy. Check before your flight some times they offer an upgrade for next to nothing. Got upgraded from J to F for 400$ return in March. JFK-AUH
