Turkish Short Haul/Istanbul City + Star Gold Q`s?

Thu Dec 10, 2009 11:11 pm

Hi there,

I am travelling over New Years from Berlin to Tel Aviv taking Turkish Airlines via Istanbul!

On the way out I have 10 hours in Istanbul and thought about checking out the City! How far is the trip from Atatürk Airport to Istanbul City?
Bus/Train?

What can I expect on the Flights (Food, Entertaiment, Seats) ?

Flying on A-321 / A-320 + B-738 / A-321 !

I am a Lufthansa Senator (Star Alliance Gold). Can I use the Lounge in Istanbul?
Is is nice?
Do they have dedicated Star Gold Counters?

I have never travelled on Turkish Airlines and have no idea how they are like and hope some of you guys have some infos!

Thanks

Patrick/ BERLIN

Quoting Delta777Jet (Thread starter):

Calculate about 45 to 60 minutes for this transfer.
You take a metro (ticket is TL 1.50) and get off at Zeytinburnu station. Change here to the tram (ticket TL 1.50) and e.g. you get off at Sultanahmet (close to the 'blue mosque' and Aya Sofia).
From this place you can also take a short walk down to Eminönü were you can enjoy Bosphorus views or take a ferry on the Bosphorus. A 2-hour ferry is possible and cost TL 10 per person.

Yes, you can use the TK lounge, also accessible by Gold cardholders.

Yes, TK have dedicated counters at IST.

btw, you might take a look in the tripreport forum on this site. Some people, including myself, have very recently posted several tripreports concerning travels to IST. The many pictures might give you an impression of this city.

Hi Patrick, didn't you know, that THY is offering a FREE sightseeing tour in Istanbul?!
Check: http://www.thy.com/de-DE/corporate/n...cements/announcement.aspx?aid=4039

BTW: there is a trip-report online, about this sight-seeing tour! Have a look!  Silly

TK is one of the few remaining full-service airlines around in Europe. So regardless of whether you're travelling in the front or back of the bus, you'll be served a full meal and there's free drinks to go with it. Food on TK is generally quite good, as is the service and the standard of their equipment.

Taking public transport in Istanbul is of course an option, but in my opinion a waste of time since taxis are pretty inexpensive. Do keep in mind it's a very big city, and the little time you've got available won't allow you to see much. I'd suggest you take a taxi to Sultanahmet and go sightseeing in that area - the Grande Basar is a must. Grab something to eat at a Kebab place; it's both cheap and very nice. I wouldn't recommend a cruise on the Bosphorus this time of year, it will be pretty cold and probably windy too. Shopping, however, is something that might interest you; leather goods in particular is very good value and you can re-claim the VAT in the airport.

With a Gold card you can use the fast track lines at passport control, which is handy since the lines can be pretty long. The TK CIP lounge is available to you, and as J-class lounges go it's one of the nicer ones. There's stuff to nibble on, but no full-service restaurant.

Enjoy TK and Istanbul, you won't be disappointed with either.
