Airlines Going Belly Up In Europe In 2010?

After SkyEurope, Flyglobespan and Air Coment I am wondering which airlines might stop operation in 2010.


So, my question: what airlines, according to your opinion, are likely to go bankrupt in 2010?

My first guess: British Airways (if Unite does decide to re-ballot and gets approval for the 12 day strike they wanted to do over Christmas but was declared illegal because of bad balloting).

While being in constant need of money, it is questionable if LO would be "allowed" by the Polish Government to fold ...

I have my money on a LCC in the UK, maybe Jet2 – Monarch Airlines is safe from their backers and their swift cost cutting.

Outside the UK I think Alitalia is going to have a bumpy ride and I think we could see Air Europa or SpanAir disappear. I also think we could see one dominant airline in Mexico – which one, I am not sure.

It will be an interesting 2010.

I'm also having doubts about BA. Their management seems bent on self-destruction and they're losing favour in the hearts and minds of the public rapidly.

I think UK LCCs will remain fairly stable, as they've seemed to weather the storm pretty well so far. Jet2 have been a little wonky recently but I think they have a good thing going with their routes and markets in the northern UK.

My bet for the UK is that smaller airlines like Air Southwest and Eastern will suffer more than others - Air Southwest is facing extremely stiff competition to the West Country from First Great Western (railway) and Eastern seem to have some very thin routes going at the moment buoyed by the charters they are living off. If that lifeline gets cut it could be curtains for them.

But it would be sad to see a reduction in UK variety.

I tried to confine on EU airlines (or better JAA airlines, knowing that EU and JAA are not identical). However, I thought, Mexico as a whole country is doing quite good in these times in spite of the crisis and the flu. I think there could be room for both, Mexicana and AeroMécixo in the long term.

What benefits do you see from the merger with IB? There was also a rumour, that IB will establish a new LCC for EU operations while itself will focus on long range by 2011. Any news about that?

Since Alitalia was bought by CAI and joined the Skyteam alliance (and was purchased by Air France in a 25%) they had a little bit earnings. Don't think on it.

About the Spanish airlines, Air Europa has a great network inside Spain and outside. Spanair was purchased by a number of Catalonian companies and is a great player in the Spanish market and Star Alliance.

My bet is to see Andalus disappearing and another UK LCC.

I think it's the other way around with the railways; SZ have done some significant damage to FGW's sales on First Class tickets from Cornwall/South Devon to London. Now we have a new operator on the cross country routes - imaginatively named CrossCountry Trains who have dramatically reduced the number of discounted fares available; I travel the route frequently and have gone from paying £10-15 each way between Plymouth and Birminghamwhen Virgin operated the route, with only slight advance booking, to there being no tickets at conveneint times under full price (£62.50rtn - £93.00 without concession) for months ahead, meaning on trips to Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle let alone Glasgow the flight is almost always cheaper, even with late booking. Plus I'm not sure if the City Council will let Air Southwest slip away; I have a feeling that 'something' would be done.

SAS is also struggling, but hopefully they are doing enough to turn it around. Besides i doubt the Scandinavian governments would let it "die"

Ahh, I didn't know two things about that - firstly, that SZ offered a First service, or that their routes from LGW were doing any damage to the convenience of being able to travel from Paddington. That said, I live in Paddington, so I might be biased  Wink

I'm glad to hear they're doing well, though. FGW are probably only going to get less competitive in the coming years, what with increasing prices and the Crossrail integration reducting capacity between Maidenhead and London...

I'm still hoping to see a return to West Country service from LHR!

It seems to me they are just continuing the way NB was operating (but with stronger competition). The money they got from the latest stocks just covered old debts. They are still not making money. Maybe the best solution would be to admit that starting the 737 operations was a mistake, and try to go back to the good old Cimber. Even if i think that would be an expensive admittance too.
