Baggage Chaos At LHR - What's Going On?

Sat Dec 26, 2009 6:35 am

I arrived in SYD early on 22nd Dec on BA from CDG and LHR, having overcome rail strikes, freezing temperatures, plane icing, only to find that BA had left my luggage behind (with all my Christmas presents), presumably at LHR. Four days of phone calls, emails and scouring the BA website for status of my file have rendered ZERO information; all I get is "Tracing Continues". It's now the evening of the 26th.

Does anyone at BA or LHR know what on earth is going on with the baggage systems there? Is this weather related, strike related or just a royal screw-up? I have trouble understanding how my bags could get from CDG to LHR T3 and then i) after a 3hour stop over, not make it onto my next BA flight, ii) after nearly 5 days, still not even be located....

Hey, on every single BA flight I've had, they lost my bags, it's only to be expected from BA.

I thought the baggage handlers are on strike at the moment.

Strikes threaten chaos for one million UK holiday travellers

Strikes by baggage handlers and check-in staff at Heathrow and Aberdeen airports are set to coincide with work stoppages by British Airways cabin crews, potentially disrupting the Christmas travel plans of one million people. Photo / APLONDON - More than a million people faced travel chaos over the Christmas and New Year's holidays as baggage handlers and check-in staff at Heathrow and Aberdeen airports announced strikes in tandem with work stoppages by British Airways cabin crews.

BA applied for an emergency court injunction yesterday to stop the 12-day strike by its workers, due to start on Tuesday, and also held last-ditch talks with union leaders.

Talks ended on Wednesday evening without news of a deal.

BA Chief Executive Willie Walsh has called the planned strike, which escalates a bitter dispute over job cuts, pay and working conditions, a "senseless" action that will ruin Christmas for many ordinary people.

The BA walkout would likely ground most of BA's planes at a time it normally operates 650 flights and carries 90,000 passengers each day.

And travellers seeking alternative flights were hit yesterday with the news that baggage handlers and check-in staff at London's Heathrow and the Aberdeen airport will hold a trio of 48-hour strikes - the first also starting on Tuesday.

Nothing to do with BA.....this industrial dispute involves SAS Ground Handling Staff.

Oz Global.....I was working on 22nd & wasn't aware of any specific baggage issues - guess it was down to bad luck this time. Good luck with tracing!

Well every BA flight i take 1 of my 2 luggages are misplaced. They should hire the correct people.BA is not the same now. I will NEVER fly BA again.

And yes...it is not a 4* airline for sure...even though skytrax has given it the rating.
LH is way better.

While I sympathise with your predicament, how does your bags being lost equate with 'baggage chaos at LHR'??

How can you be sure of that? As you do not have that many BA flights leaving CDG, I doubt the luggages were loaded in the wrong a/c!

How can you be sure it was lost in LHR ?
It could have been wronlgy loaded in CDG, mishandled in LHR, wrongly offloaded in SIN, hell it could have fallen off the baggage tuck in SYD

presumably at LHR.

I don't think that you can presume this any more, the system at T5 is far better than it used to be at T4. However, it is possible that it was misplaced between T5 and T3, but also entirely possible that it happened at CDG or SIN(?). My sympathies either(any) way!

Quoting Jayeshrulz (Reply 5):

Can I ask when the last time you flew with BA was? All recent evidence points to baggage issues being relatively rare at T5 unless there is a catastrophic breakdown (thankfully uncommon). The latest statistics suggest that BA baggage performance is now amongst the best. Many people have put a huge amount of effort into 'sorting out' the old issue, so BA DO hire the correct people!

As for your assertion about BA not being the same as it was - I can tell you that there were many times in the past when I was operating out of T4, that I would have agreed with you, but my own experiences of working with BA out of T5 have been mostly possitive and the passengers that I have spoken to, in the main, agree.

If you say that you will NEVER fly with BA again, then I am saddened. If you knew how much time, effort and loyalty that people like me, all over the airline, put into BA and the way that we take our safety culture and operating standards so seriously, then I think you would re-evaluate, but if your opinion is irreversible, then I am truly sorry.

This has nothing to do with BA! These are SAS baggage handlers. All of BA is working normally at the moment (with some weather disruption). The next industrial problem will probably be in February when the cabin crew will probably be re-balloted. Everyone else in BA would hope that the issues are resolved before then!

The only reason I said this was because the BA (contract) baggage service at SYD said that on their system they could see that the bags had at least been 'sighted' at LHR T3. However, when I sign onto the tracing system on the net (at least 100 times) there is always "NO INFORMATION".

As a very frequent very long haul traveler, I have sensed this about BA, which is what has kept me coming back to them in favour of our own QF, and of the Arab and Asian airlines we are all so given to praising. I am just being pushed to the limit of this loyalty over these past days....

How many flights have you flown then?? Your one very very unlucky guy. Never had my bag misplaced. And have flown them a lot over the past 5 years. Its missed my plane once or twice, but that is what happens when you go on staff travel and are on-loaded at the last minute sometime

Take it you don't do point to point and fly via somewhere. Thats where the majority of misplaced bags get misplace, on connecting flights

Past 5 or 6 days has been hell for Euro airlines with regards to the weather and flights getting canx and badly delayed. Due to this baggage systems at most major airports affected would have been full to bursting with short shipped bags (bags not on the planes, or going around after the plane was cancelled)

The day you flew was probably in the heart of the weather problems and I know LHR's system was at bursting point.

I understand that this is likely, but isn't it surprising that 5 days after my arrival in Oz (not to mention the additional 24hrs for the flight), the bags still are listed as "NO INFORMATION" (i.e. not even located yet)?

Did you have your name and contact information inside your bag?
Sadly I've seen too many bags over the yeats with tags that have come off that simply cannot be identified as to even what airline they might belong to let alone which passenger.

Otherwise who knows. Some fella in Ghana might be walking around in your clothes today and thanks you for the Xmas present.

btw - Unidentified luggage for a bunch of airlines ends up with this company in the US that auctions or sells the bags and contents. You can walk way with several suitaces filled with mystery contents for a few dollar. People land computers and all types of stuff.

I believe however in BA's case for UK baggage, it auctions unidentified items by the truck load every Tuesday at Greasbys in Tooting.

I can assure you all the this christmas period at LHR was indeed baggage chaos. It was a pure meltdown in fact.

I work in the BSO in DUB and were missing hundreds of baggs from LHR alone. Still we are waiting for 70+ to come over and that is DUB alone!

I was working late last night and thankfully began to get bags in from the 20/21/22/23/24 DEC.

Sorry to hear you can get any info, we have abandoned answering the phones because we are so busy sorting out people and bags! Im sure its the same at SYD.

If you want to PM me with your reference number I can have a look in work today and let you know later?
