Airline Menu Cards In Economy?

Mon Jan 04, 2010 4:43 am

I was curious what airlines give out menu cards for their inflight food service in economy class?

I have only been given menu cards in economy on MEA, unless I was given them by other airlines when I was younger and I just don't remember.

Here is the menu card from my most recent MEA flight from LHR to BEY back in March:

English menu cover:

Arabic menu cover:

Alcohol menu (in French only):

French menu:

Arabic menu:

English menu:

I'd love to see recent scans/photos of other airline menu cards from economy class.

Hmm.. I have no scans or other pics of it, but Singapore does that too! Very nice little booklet with all available options, both for incoming and outgoing flights from given location.

CX does as well -- at least, I recall getting one when I went home in July last year.

TG also does (or did) with certain flights...like JFK-BKK back when it operated. I assume that LAX-BKK still provides Y menus.

My experience was that on CX it was the long haul flights and not regional flights (e.g. they have them on JFK-HKG).

I got a meal "postcard" when I flew Air France CDG->JFK recently...

It was postcard sized but when you opened it they had the full economy meal service in French and English and listed two choices for the main meal...

The food itself wasn't much better than any U.S. carrier across the Atlantic, except the BREAD was really good and the cheese was of a higher quality.

I don't know if they still do this, but Etihad had a beautiful menu distributed in Economy on our JFK-AUH flight back in 2007.

Qantas has them (at least they did a couple years ago). I also have some from Swissair, Balair, BA (I posted a pic of them in the timetable thread)

I recall being served a menu card 20 years ago on AA in economy. The route was JFK to FRA. I was a teenager traveling with my mom.

Amazingly enough, the last time I flew DL across the Atlantic, in 2007 (JFK-BCN/ATH-JFK), there were menus in Y.

Actually, the whole service was pretty nice, let down by the ageing 763s and awful terminals at JFK. Pretty good food and service. There was even an amenity kit.

As mentioned before, AF also offers menus in Y on intercontinental flights. I've also found AF's food quite good for Y, though now with ten-abreast seating in the 777 I might avoid it (or at least try to stick to Airbuses).

BA gave menus once, but cut them sometime in the 2000s. Unfortunately the Y product has been cheapened, though the basics are all still there including decent food.

You will get a menu in economy on VN as well.
The crew even collects them before landing.
And I have to say that VNs meals are good.  thumbsup

I flew JFK-BOM on DL in Feb. 2008 and there was a menu card in economy.
But, strange or odd you may call, I flew ATL-BOM a year later in Feb. 2009 on their then new 777-LR and there was no menu card in economy.

NW still gave them out in 2007 on SEA-NRT-SEA. At the time, they gave them out on TPAC flights but not TATL flights. Not sure if DL has kept them or not. I would assume it makes more sense for Asian destinations given the different languages and scripts used for each country. NW's menus were printed in English, Japanese, Chinese, and I believe Korean.

I think quite a few non-US airlines do this. Off the top of my head, on some recent long haul flights that I took, almost all (if not all) flights had these. Some that come to mind are:

AF: LAX-PPT
LA: PPT-IPC
TN: PPT-AKL
QF: SYD-LAX

There are others that I can't think of at the moment. Also, I flew DL ATL-PRG last year and I think they may have had menus as well. Speaking of DL, I don't fly them very often any more my on two domestic flights I took last year, both had very nice menus with pictures. Of course, most of the food was for purchase, but still, the menus were very nicely made. US had them too on a recent domestic flight I took.

Back when AA flew ORD-DME they gave out a menu in Coach.. sorry Main Cabin.. I still have it somewhere, if I find it, I'll try to scan it.

Do they give out menus on other trans-atlantic routes or was it just a Russia thing?

SQ hands out menus in Y class on all flights except those Southeast Asian flights under 2 hours. So you will not receive any on their turnaround services to BKK, SGN, CGK, KUL sectors.

I don't think TG does them for regional flights but rather shows a card with two pictures of the options available and asks you to pick verbally with the flight attendant. Not the most classy or aesthetically pleasing way of doing things, but better than nothing at all I suppose.

As SQ772 mentioned they do offer this but not on short regional flights - I didn't get one when i flew back from Bali with them last October.

DL had menus in coach on my JFK-NRT flight with them - quite simple, but classy nonetheless. It was a longish card with the Delta logo on it and the menu printed with the three meal services (lunch/snack/dinner) featured in Japanese and English. The other side of the card was the duty free form for those who wanted to partake in that. Interestingly enough though we didn't receive one on the return sector.

Yes, I would be interested in seeing some of your collections if you would be so kind to scan them!

USAir and CO used to have them back in the 80's. I think this was standard fair for all long haul and coast to coast runs for the big airlines.

I always remembered the smell of the amentity kits. It looked like a leather bag but smelled like vinyl. Those were the days.

You would think an airline would make menus that are laminated. That way they could collect them at the end of every flight. It would cost a little money but not nearly as much as printing them each day. Certainly a better alternative then cutting the coach menus all together.

US Airways had them right up to 9-11, they went away after that. At that point it was only for TATL flights, it was a little brochure with the meals, on the back it had a map of PHL with the main sights and what not. Not sure if they had a version for CLT.
Bakc in 2005 I flew on DL btw ATL and FRA and FRA and JFK, on both segments we got a menu card - one side was in German, the other in English.
ON my most recent EK flight, NOV 09- on the SFO to DXB flight a very nice menu card was provided. It was in both Arabic and English, considering the demographics of the passengers on that flight they should provide a menu card in Hindi as well.
On a slightly different note, I found it interesting that on LH J class btw LAX and FRA - the menu card provided was in German, English and interestingly enough Spainsh.

They do actually. A postcard sized menu card is distributed to all passengers between KUL/BKK.

I also had MenuCards in Y on LH flights - but only very few ones (MUC-SIN and HKG-MUC). AFAIK it is only seldom that they do that - happened only 2 times to me until now but would be nice to have that every time...  Smile

VS used to, however this was stopped post 9/11 as part of a money saving scheme. If IIRC they were two tone in colour, a lime green and teal colour was one as was yellow and blue on another.

DL did in 2007 when flying LGW-ATL. Interestingly the crew collected the cards after the meal service, so I guess they must reuse them or recycle them or something.

Menu card may be pushing the definition a bit but WN has a card in the seatback that lists all the drink options and the fact you get peanuts/pretzels or a snack pack depending on the flight.

I thought I had read DL was bringing back the menu card, at least on Long Haul, but my last flight from CDG-SLC didn't have any menu cards. Or am I imaging things?

I got one from AF CDG - PEK in June 2006 on (B772), I didn't get one on my return leg HKG - CDG (B773). I might just go and have a look to see do I still have it.

It was a nice thought and it makes you feel like your in a bit more than an economy class, it's small things like that can brighten up an airlines image which may be useful in todays economy.

AF still has small printed menus in Y class on longhaul flights, about the same size and shape as a paper airline ticket. In Y class where there are almost never more than 2 choices it seems like a needless waste of paper especially with airlines trying to become more environmentally-friendly. It doesn't take long to ask "chicken or pasta", or whatever the options may be.

The printed menus I've had on AF and DL have been quite small and the only choice has been between two main courses for the main meal (dinner or lunch). Everything else is described, but there is no choice.

Does it matter to me that I get them on AF and DL and not on AA, BA or KL? Not really.

Interestingly, I have always had menu cards on both/all of my long-haul flights, or none. It's always been consistent.
