Direct Flights Without Direct Returns!

Mon Jan 04, 2010 9:14 pm

Just a quick question... I hope it makes sense!

Are there any/many flights out there that don't have a direct return flight with the same airline? As in, where a flight goes directly from A to B, but not (directly) from B to A?

From BEG Jat flies to Malta but there is no return flight. Instead it goes to Tripoli and then straight to Belgrade, so if you want to go from Malta to BEG you have to go via Tripoli or another city.

Air Mauritius operates once a week GVA-MRU nonstop. The return flight operates MRU-FRA-GVA. For FRA passengers, it's the opposite where the soutbhound flight stops at GVA and the northbound flight is nonstop. However, the flights are still "direct" meaning "same aircraft" but they are not nonstop in both directions. The "direct" definition includes flights that make intermediate stops.

Aircraft may do this, but the flight may not be available to passengers ie U2 SXF-LGW-VCE-SXF

I think there are more U2 examples including maintenance swap overs for the A320s.

TG may have done BKK-SYD-AKL-BKK in the past.

Also may occur at the summer/winter and winter/summer timetable change overs.

These are called Triangle Routes, and there are several, though I can't name any with 100% certainty. I believe CDG-LAX-PPT-CDG is one, but it MAY go back to LAX before going to France. I know KLM's AMS-SXM-___-AMS is another, though I don't remember where the stop is.

Either CUR (Curacao) or BON (Boinaire) depending on the day of the week

Monarch are operating the following during the Winter using A330s;

LGW-UVF-BGI-LGW
LGW-TAB-GND-LGW

These are regualarly operated in the summer;

LGW-VOL-JSI-LGW A321-200
MAN-VOL-JSI-MAN B757-200

You will also find that a lot of European charter carriers operate triangular long haul routings. For example, I know that Condor operate the following;

FRA-MRU-SEZ-FRA B767-300

Thomson Airlines and Thomas Cook will also be operating triangular flights, most likely through Caribbean islands, especially Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

Virgin Atlantic are another airline that I belive operate triangles through the Caribbean.

I'm also booked on a tringular routing for February. To travel from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, I am flying the following;
AEP-USH
and
USH-FTE-AEP
These flights are with Lan Argentina.

They're called "triangular flights", because the flight path would resemble more a triangle.

Syrian Air's old DAM-MAN-LHR-DAM service comes to mind, it may have routed in reverse order, and I'm not sure if it still flies TBH. They also have some similar routes involving BEY, LTK and ALP.

Air Southwest fly most of their routes in triangular formation, but all of them (IIRC) flip back now and again, meaning direct flights are available in both directions.

AeroSvit do something like KBP-SOF-BEG-KBP.

There are hundreds really.

AA has daily Miami-Salvador-Recife-Miami and daily (soon 2x daily) Miami-La Paz-Santa Cruz-Miami. In the case of the Bolivia route, La Paz' altitude does not allow an aircraft to take off and make it non-stop to Miami.

United has Chicago-Maui-Kona-Chicago. The runway at Maui combined with the equipment used does not allow the plane to make it non-stop to O'Hare.

JALWays has Tokyo-Kona-Honolulu-Tokyo.

EVA will soon have Taipei-Toronto-Anchorage-Taipei.

I believe CDG-LAX-PPT-CDG

PPT-CDG is an awfully long flight - I believe both TN and AF fly via LAX in both directions

KLM has several triangular ME routings such as AMS-BAH-AUH-AMS or AMS-BAH-DOH-AMS etc. (they may have been changed/suspended though). They're not entirely uncommon.
Another one is BA's LCY-SNN-JFK-LCY service.

Westbound PR flights LAX-MNL and SFO-MNL have technical stops in GUM. Eastbound PR flights MNL-LAX and MNL-SFO are nonstop.
