UAL To HNL Upgrade Question

Thu Jan 07, 2010 7:26 pm

Traveling to HNL out of DEN next week and curious about upgrading from Y+ to F using mileage.
Not having flown a UA 767 in years, anyone have opinion on if its worth the 30k miles for my wife and myself to upgrade from Econ + to F on that flight? What's the service like in F and Y+?
Also, what are my odds of getting the upgrade if I submit for UA flight to HNL? F cabin is about 1/2 full now.

And as an aside, any Y+ seats on the 767 that I should avoid. Seatguru didn't tell me too much.

Thanks in advance all!

Worth it. . .?? You should know that all UA's 767's 777's to Hawaii have a standard domestic F cabin. So only 39 inch pitch - standard recline and no foot rest. Check seatguru.com. So. . . some folks think it is not worth it just for free drinks and better food.

RE: UAL To HNL Upgrade Question

My wife and I flew United in First SFO-HNL and return in October. We used a corporate travel agent and had unlimited flexibility with our travel dates, but the travel agent had no luck finding upgrades with mileage for us. He said United is very stingy these days with upgrades to Hawaii.

So, we paid the First Class fare (the agent found us a very good fare given our flexibility in travel dates). For my money, and this is just one person's opinion (but my wife agrees), the extra money was worth it, not necessarily for the food and extra room in First Class, but simply so we weren't crammed into Coach with all the aggravations that entails. We really don't think of ourselves as snobs, but we got a good deal on the First Class fare and figured, what the hell, it's worth it just not to be stuck in Coach.

The service on the flights was very nice. Food was tasty and ample (I had a hard time eating all of it) and the flight attendants were friendly and accommodating. So, for my money, it was worth it even if First on United Hawaii flights is not what one would find on many comparable international flights.

764fler -- if you search in trip reports forum here on a.net you should find a report or two with pics of the UA Hawaii FC service. We don't fly UA to the islands in F because of the standard pitch and seats, but their FC food/beverage service seems comparable to AA, DL and CO. Again, the difference is the seat and pitch - AA, DL and CO have 59-60" pitch with lie-flat or recliner on their 767's and 330's to HI. But, if you can get a UA upgrade for only 30k miles --- certainly a lot more comfy on your 7 hours from DEN-HNL than in economy. Have fun!

Thanks for the great responses. Anyone have input on how hard these upgrades are to come by or is it pretty automatic as long as you don't mind using the 30k miles?

Hit or miss on the DEN-HNL flight. The UGDG list is either a mile long or has like 2 people on it. Just depends on the luck of the day, I guess.

If you want to send me your exact travel date over a PM, I can check the status of the UGDG list for you starting at 24 hours prior. Let me know if you fly out on F/Sa/Su, first beer is always on me for a.net folks passing through DEN.
