Impressed By The A340-600!

Sun Jan 10, 2010 12:11 am

So I just arrived in IST from OKC. My routing was OKC-DEN on a UA A319, and DEN-FRA on an A340-600 of Lufthansa. Man, there is something just really impressive about that aircraft! It has a really solid feel to it, and I will give you airbus guys this, it is a touch quieter than the 777. Now, having said that, I don't like the interior as I think they could have done a better job making it flow and more airy, but damn, it's one sexy aircraft. Oh, and the use of LED lights throughout really were cool.

Here's a shot of that sexy wing:

Anyone else surprised by the airbus widebodies? My only really other complaint is that the windows are tiny, and well, the narrowbodies do nothing for me.

Yeah the A346 really is a great piece of kit. A sad reflection on me, but one of the things I love about the A340 is the signage. All LED and when the captain switches on the seatbelt signs they flash to get your attention.

The -300 series is even quieter. Even the old models. A pleasure to fly in.

Yes, the A340 is a lovely plane to fly on. It's always been very under-rated.

Some people I know prefer it to the A380 because it is still quiet, but doesn't have as many people on it.

If I can choose the planes I prefer to fly on, it's A340, A380 and the very latest B737-800.

I also, like the A346. Like the way it look like a hybrid of an A300 and DC-8 series 60/70's, as a matter of fact, I look at an A340 to an A300 as a DC-8 is to a DC-9, a four engine big sister. As for noise level, both the A340 and A380 are too quite at take off for me. I like the rumble of a 747 engines, or the high pitch spool up sound of a 777 with GE 90s.

Have you had a look at the Y washrooms? I like how they are downstairs. They even have snacks in front of them, haha!

I also like the 2-seaters at the window - to me the most powerful selling tool for tickets on A340/330 (and the -600 is no exception).

Glad you enjoyed the bird!

A ride on the the A346 is great way to forget how awesome the 777 really is. I've never had a bad experience on any A330/340 and have always thought the interiors to be very well done. It is very quiet, and reasonably comfortable in every class I've ever flown them*.
I know the windows are a touch small, but they are nice & high, and nothing like as bad as our friend the CR2!

*Ok folks, this is Anet for crying out loud. Is the 777 noise really that offensive? I thought we were airplane nerds who were supposed to like that sort of thing! No one ever buys a Porsche and complains of "Engine Noise"...

I've had eight flights on A340-600s on LH and VS, four in C and four in Y and I'll go out of my way to choose it.

Unfortunately, it's a choice that is seldom available.  Sad

I hate that sound! Even worse when they throttle it back slightly - a very painful sound. To be honest, I'd love all planes to be as quiet as the A380 - it'd make my house a lot quieter. I like planes, but I don't their noise when I'm trying to watch TV or listen to music.

Yeah, its a nice airframe. I still have more intercontinental legs on A340 airframes than 747 & 777 models, including the Etihad A345 legs that I just flew a couple of weeks ago. In profile, the 346 is just awesome to look at, second only to the 747 profile, IMO.

Totally Disagree. I'd rather get to my destination rested on a quiet plane rather than be up all night over the ocean thinking about great the plane is because the jets sound like F-16 after burners. No thanks...

I still love taking off from LAX, getting to cruise, and barely hearing a peep out of the A380 jets until landing in MEL. Best nights sleep of any flight of my life.

Rubbish. If I'm sitting in a long-haul jet for 10 hours I want to be able to talk to the person next to me without shouting and to get off the flight feeling relaxed, not as if I've just driven coast to coast on a Harley Davidson!

"Should"? Excuse me, SHOULD??! Please don't tell me what the qualifications are for being a "plane fan". I've been enjoying airliners since before you were born. You get your kicks from noisy planes if you like but please don't lay down rules for everyone else.

My thoughts too. It's why I don't like the B747 so much.

But Bose noise-cancelling headphones do a good job of cancelling the B747 P&W washing machine sound out (if they haven't been banned because of terrorism paranoia).

When my Bose QC3's wear out, I'll replace them with Quiet Comfort 15s.

I love photographing planes, and the F16 (incredibly loud) is one of my favourites to photograph - but I don't like loud noise all the time.

Strangely, in hundreds of segments over the course of my life I have *never* ridden in an A330/A340. It seems all my international segments always happen to be on 757, 767 or 777 equipment.

I keep hoping I'll have an itinerary that allows me to experience the -600 in particular -- all the reports I read, and pictures I see, are impressive. Airbus may have made the plane too heavy to have competitive economics, but it seems they really nailed it from a passenger point of view.

I agree. Gorgeous. Looks like a modern day DC-8 from the outside (one of my favourite aircraft) and a delight to behold on the inside.

But overall, I do think I marginally prefer the 77W...........

I've had enough experience on both types to make an informed opinion:

I've done A343s on VS, EK, EY
I've done A345s on EY and EK
I've done A346s on VS, QR, EY, TG and LH.

I've done 772s on BA, AA, UA, CO, AF, SQ, EK, KU, KE and MH
I've done 773s, on EK, TG, CX and SQ
I've done 77Ws on EK, EY, QR, SQ, AF, AC, NH and KL.

The A340NG are just awesome aircraft to fly on - so quiet yet so powerful. They feel larger than the 773s even though they arent as wide, and they are much quieter. Take-offs are not as powerful, but far quieter and they handle turbulence better in my opinion. I prefer the overhead bins and mood lighting on the triple seven, but overall the A340NG is my choice if i have one. I'm 100% happy on a triple seven but i prefer A340s.

A380 is much quieter again then even the A343s though in my experience (EK, QF and SQ) - have been told that EK had to put white noise generators in their crew rest areas on their A388s because the noise of the cabin pax etc is too loud!

I've done a lot more flights on 777s than on A340s - the thing is that a lot of it is to do with service and IFE - I'd rather go on an SQ or QR 77W than a Philippines A343 or Hainan A346 for example, but given the chance I'd take the A340 over the 777 if possible.

There's not as much in it as some Airbus nuts would have you believe but the A340 has a slight edge i think in terms of passenger appeal. Its just a better, quieter, smoother and more pleasant ride in my opinion.

Its still much more econoical than the 744 - people tend to forget that. The only thing Airbus did wrong was not to hand a pair of GE90-115bs under those big wings.

Just because its not as economical as the 77W doesnt make it uncompetitive. Its still much more economical than the aircraft it replaced - the 744 and 747 classic. It carries more payload, further, for 20% less fuel burn.

And it is still better than the 77W for the hot and high missions.

...but the A340 cannot compete in one respect:

Anyone felt the GE90s start up?

It starts with a low rumble. It rises in pitch, louder and louder, until it reverberates through the fuselage until the whole plane is vibrating, then the pitch increases and its softens to the far-off-waterfall noise.

I love the fact that in Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Gatwick and a slew of other airports you are totally insulated from noise whilst walking on the concourse, 747s taking off are just a hushed whisper, but as soon as a 77W pushes back and starts up outside it reverberates through the entire terminal - unmistakable.

This whole noise on the Airbus 330/340 vs. 777 should also be noted on the 320 vs.737NG. LIke the widebodies, I find sitting behind the wings on the 320s to be fairly quiet and when sitting behind the wing on a 737NG its god awful loud, esp. when climbing between altitudes. Is it a design flaw? Surprised Boeing allows this.

I have also been on an A340-600 with LH YYZ-FRA. It truly is a great aircraft. Very comfortable smooth flight. It was quiet indeed. I flew back on an AC 773 FRA-YYZ. It is also a remarkable aircraft. It was an enoyable flight. I will admit it was a little noisier and turbulent.

I echo your sentiment...it is an impressive aircraft to behold and flying it is noticably different than anything else xcepting the A380 as I have never flown her...but even on the ground the steerable rear undercarriage gives you a strange sensation while turning corners...245 feet long and no tailskid!...I took D-AIHO to EDDM and D-AIHR back...

I always have enjoyed flying on AC's A333 and A343. Never had the opportunity to fly on the A345 the short time it was in the fleet. Nor have I been on a A346. If I get the chance to fly to FRA I have always wanted to fly one way on the LH346 and return on the AC77W to closely compare. My neighbour flies regularly between YYZ and FRA and flies both aircraft routinely. He doesn't have a clear preference and sleeps most of the way anyways.

He isn't quite so fond of the first class pods when he is awake and calls them coffins. However for sleeping he quite likes them.

Being from SA, it means that about 90% of my flights are on SAA. As you know they make use of the A342, A343 and A346.

I made use of EK to Europe via DXB, DL to ATL, AF to CDG and KL to AMS a few times and must admit that I miss the effortless and smooth cruising of the A340 everytime I fly on the 777. Not that I want to say I don not enjoy the 777 as well...

I am looking forward to fly SAA on the A332's that will arrive in 2011 although I am not sure what routes they will service.

The only A340 I've flown in is a 343, CDG-JFK on AF.

I enjoyed the JFK-CDG flight on the 77E, but the return on the 343 was one of my best flights ever. It was an equipment sub for the scheduled 332. Arriving rather early at the gate I wondered if it would indeed by our aircraft but I was delighted to find that it was.

The Y seating seemed a bit more spacious than the 77E (even though it was a 9-abreast one), and yes, it is quiet. I know many here like to deride the 343 but I found it a great ride across the Atlantic - in fact maybe the most comfortable airplane I've ever flown in. The 2-4-2 seating configuration in Y is very nice, as is the smooth and quiet ride, and as anything other than a twin has become rather rare on the Atlantic, I get excited just if something has more than two engines these days. The A330 still preserves the seating configuration (especially appreciated in these days of 10-abreast 777s), but the A340 is more special.

I would like to try the 346, or better yet, the 342 or 345. I've always had a thing for the 342, probably just because it's rare, and now you can add the 345 to that. These two are sort of the 747SPs of the 1990s and 2000s, IMHO. A friend of mine in SIN tried to convince me to take SQ's 345 EWR-SIN to visit him back when it still had a Y cabin, however now that it's all-J it's out of my range and his too! If and when I ever get to SIN I guess I'll arrive on something duller.

And have sweaty ears after 2-3 hours.   They are bad for that - first hand experience here.

I can never sleep easily on a plane, the vibration and roar of the engines is really keeps me awake.

Recent flight was on an old B737-400, a late night flight on a Friday (last one for the evening, and it was delayed). Even though I had seat 2A in J class, between the engine noise, wind noise and air-con roar, it was so noisy - no opportunity to get sleep. And it's just a small plane, not a big inter-continental airliner.

I can sleep easily on the quiet peak-hour intercity trains we have in Sydney (they are very quiet), but it's very hard for me to sleep on planes.

So for me, I gravitate towards the quieter planes for long journeys.

Last November I was flying the 777 the first time (unbelievable) and yes it is quiet loud, but it didn't bother me at all. I prefer the 330/340 because of the seating configuration, I like that there are only two seats at the window!!! Thats why I would always prefer the 330/340 over the 777 or even the 380 (but looking forward flying it in February).

I haven't been on an A380 until now. So for me the A340 is by far the best plane to travel on. As most of the posters above said, it is silent, smooth in the air and the seating layout is (with the exception of the 767) the best.
If I have the choice I will take the A340 over anything.
Too sad for me that most of my trips are on B744. I like the Jumbo from a plane enthusiast's point of view, but from a passenger's point of view it is very uncomfortable.

Way to go A340!

Quite unbelievable with the amount of flying I do, but I still haven't had a chance to fly the A340. Actually, I did have a chance a couple of times, but opted for the B777 or B747 instead.

I prefer the B747 to any other airplane simply because of its heritage and the fact that they're not going to be around for a lot longer. I don't quite like the B777, it seems not to handle the turbulence very well, but I do like to roar of GE90s.

Apart from the A330 which seems to have the quietest and smoothest ride, for us "old guys" the most pleasant flights were on L1011s - now that was a ride, each and every time!

Not in my experience. I've flown HKG-YVR on the 77W and ICN-YVR on an A343, and the 777's ride in turbulence was a lot smoother than the 343's. Either that, or the turbulence I experienced on the 343 was more severe than on the 777.

One thing I agree on about the 346 is its fantastic cabin design. Newer 330/340s have a great looking cabin. While I'm sure the 346 is a fantastic aircraft, and quiet, I'd still prefer the 777, as it has a wider, roomier cabin and I just love the larger windows, Boeing signature interior and the noise the GE90s make. Ok, it may be noisier than a 333 (8 years since I've been on a 343 so I can't really remember how it was like), but it's really not as bad as some of you are making it out to be. I certainly didn't need to shout to talk to the person next to me or the person two across from me.

Aside from the 747, the 777 would be my first choice for widebody transport.

Last year in February, I flew LH 340-600 twice (FRA-ORD and LAX-MUC). The aircraft is a beauty, the PTVs worked well etc etc but I thought the seats were extremely uncomfortable.

Apart from the A330 which seems to have the quietest and smoothest ride, for us "old guys" the most pleasant flights were on L1011s - now that was a ride, each and every time!

I much preferred the DC-10 (and MD-11) due to their much larger windows which made the cabin seemed brighter and more spacious, and permitted a much better view than the L-1011's smaller windows.

Yes, the 777 is wider but it also has 9 (and increasingly 10) seats across in Y class. I much prefer the 2-4-2 Airbus cabin than 3-3-3 (or 3-4-3) on a 777. Less chance of a middle seat and no need to climb over 2 other passengers if you're in a window seat. Very few 777 operators (mainly UA and AA) are 2-5-2 in Y class but then you have the horrible middle seat in the 5-abreast center section.

I'm curious: the people that don't like the 3-3-3 or 3-4-3 layout on a 777, do they also dislike the 3-4-3 layout on the 747 and A380? Larger planes are bound to have more seats per row, and as such, there can't always be a block of 2 next to a window, unless you choose to sit at the back of the plane.

Granted, 2-4-2 is more convenient for the window seat passenger, but personally, I prefer the wider and roomier cabin of the 777, even if it means having to get over two other passengers while sitting in the window.

I prefer 2-4-2 on an A340 to 3-4-3 on a 747, sure.

The fewer middle seats, the better. The 767 is dull but it's great in that respect!

I flew TG A340-600 and I was dissapointed, because I don´t find it anything better then A340-300 (flew EK, LX and OA). I enjoyed A340-300 though...Would be great to fly A340-200 before they are gone.

And btw, I find all A340s to be louder then B777 especially on take-off...don´t know why...

Na...not me,...more tech,...when 950,000 lbs of lightweight material can hang four 9,000lb engines on it and project 80,000lbs of thrust each, with 350 humans onboard and slingshot them seven miles up half way across the globe in 14 hours...well for me its the entire experience...however, adds to the experience when the machine looks great...no doubt...j

I'll just add my thoughts since I have flown both the 777-200ER (LY and CO) and A340-600 (LH).

The 777 is certainly loud on takeoff -- the power of those engines is almost frightening. Once in cruise, I found the ride to be quiet and the seats quite comfortable. Absolutely no complaints.

The LH 346 is certainly elegant and quiet as a whisper on takeoff. The seats, however, were probably the most uncomfortable I have ever put my rear in on any long-distance flight. Luckily, the flight was only five hours. If it had been longer, I would've lost my mind since I had already lost circulation in the lower half of my body.

The headsets do get warm but having commuted on trains for 5 years to NYCity, I have found train noise and jet engines to be like "white noise" louder than my thoughts...therefore I sleep well...and I'm not the talking type...I really don't want to deal with strangers family histories and the headset makes a great "Do Not Disturb" statement. Snobbish as it sounds...I love flying and listening to certain music while doing so...  zzz

Yes... there's something strange about flight time. Normally, A340/A330 takes 9 hrs whereas B744/B77W takes 8 hrs when flying between Sydney and Hong Kong. I am wondering why they are "different" speeding
