Emirates Vs UA/LH SFO-BLR

Sun Jan 17, 2010 2:57 am

I have to be in BLR next week and I am looking at the best possible way to get there. I am a UA exec premier but i can not only fly econ (thanks to my very "generous" employer) emirates via dubai seems to be the most comfortable and shortest routing although it does not give me any UA EQMs..... singapore air is another option but adds many more hours to my trip due to 2 stops and long connections.. almost one more day to get to BLR which I can not afford...

so what do you all think? does emirates worth it? also what are the loads expected to be? SFO-DXB Jan 24th and DXB-SFO Feb 10th

does emirates worth it?

I would say no, since they operate 10 abreast 777s. Being in economy for that long is bad enough, but that would make it worse.

- Fair point, however that aside the whole inflight experience, food, service, IFE(if you use it) will be much better than UA.

Overall the choice is really down to FF miles and tierage, do you need the UA points & miles or not?

If not, take EK.

Hmm. Maybe try QR via IAD or IAH? You can earn miles on UA doing that, plus you get one less seat per row than EK.

Funny this thread should come up now. I have to go to BLR in about 2 weeks, and I was looking pretty much the same options as you. Except my employer is less "generous" than HAF's -- my extremely budget conscious manager made me book the cheapest option, which was UA/LH. I'm not exactly looking forward to a long haul flight in Y on those 744s.

I'm always a little amused when a.netters insist that it's the leisure travelers who only care about getting the lowest price and business travelers are willing to pay more for better service, miles, or whatever, because for me it's the other way around. When I travel for work my hands are tied; I'm required by company policy to book the cheapest option. When I travel on my own dime I at least have the freedom to pick an airline I like if I want to.

i made my decision and booked on emirates and although i would be getting close to 20,000 miles on UA they will not be EQMs. Sad my decision was based on:

-- comfort of seating, 34'' legroom on 777-300ER, better service, better meals, entertainment options
-- connections and shortest routing to BLR
-- pricing ($1200 SFO-BLR booked less than a week prior to the flight! so i save my employer some $$)
-- very light load, which hopefully will allow me to stretch out
-- AC power so i can work on my laptop on those loooooong flights
-- most importantly, i want to try a new airline and an exciting route

(if i am struggling to make exec premier next Dec, and i have to fly SFO-SYD again over the weekend on UA, ....you know why... Smile )

It also comes down to how much space you need in terms of seat width. For someone like me, 10 abreast 777s would be fine so my decisions wouldn't be based around the configurations such as 9 vs 10 abreast.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

That adds an extra stop, which the OP said was unacceptable given the short time frame of the trip.

Glad you chose EK, I think it's the right choice. Enjoy your flight, send me a PM and I'll check the portal and see if I know anyone working your outbound flight out of SFO...try to get you some extra good service  Smile

I am a fan of EK, so I will list all the reasons why I will choose EK over UA/LH:

1. Foremost, AVOD and the choice of entertainment is very important to me. There can simply be no comparison between EK and UA/LH in this regard.
2. Food in economy is certainly better on EK. I like the fact that they carry mango juice  Smile
3. I have flown the EK flight out of SFO twice in the last 2 months - the interior is incomparable to UA's interior.
4. In my view, EK and SQ are the two best airlines for economy class travel, and by far.

Hope you enjoy your trip

I disagree for EK 777s due to their cramped 10-abreast seating.

I totally see your point. I have a rather average, thin frame, and fit OK in those seats  Smile. My main criteria are as listed in my earlier post - Entertainment, food, cabin cleanliness/newer planes, and better FFP/upgrade possibilities.

So I am back at the States (a bit earlier than planned), and i can say that i enjoyed my flights with Emirates. If I had to choose making this trip again though, probably I would go with Singapore air and not Emirates. There were a few things that Emirates just did not do right on their flights:

- Their beverage service after a meal lags behind by 20-30 min, this happened consistently on all flights i was on, so at the last leg i had to "stash" a wine bottle in my seat pocket to have with my dinner.

- They always start their meal service from the front so by the time they are at the back they do not have all the options available, other airlines start their first meal from the front and the the second from the back so that at least on the second meal you can get your first option. By the 4th leg I could not have any more of their Hindu Veg option...

- I found most of their flight attendants to be fairly young and inexperienced, many calls were not responded to, and actually they gave the impression that they were too tired to attend to people. Some of them actually were surely...

- Although the legroom was generous on their 777-300ERs the width of their seats is miserable, the flight from dxb to sfo was packed, the elbow space was very restricted when you have a neighbor

Overall I would say Emirates averages better than LH/UA but I can not understand all the hype, certainly not the airline with perfect service, i would give them a 6 out of 10 in economy as an average across all the flights i was on.
