Airfares Rise The More You Click?

Fri Jan 29, 2010 8:54 am

I find myself halfway amused and halfway disgusted. Checking airfares tonight I noticed an interesting trend. If I checked any combinations of flights with a stop in them, the airfare for each leg of the flight would go up each time if any new combination shared any legs with the old combo. I was writing prices down as I went along, and catching onto this, went back and checked my first, original combination, and found that within a span of 10 minutes the airfare had risen $300!

And all of this was on AA. Are they using a robot on their site to artificially hike airfares the more you check a route? I think thats pretty shady at best and makes me reluctant to give them any business at all.

Are there any other airlines that pull this little trick on their websites?

I experienced this some days ago at Jetstar. I just restarted the computer and deleted all cookies ... and I had the cheap prices again

Other Airlines like Austrian, FlyNiki, Finnair or Emirates seem to have "stable" prices.

What about if you use Kayak or something similar. Does the same stay true?

I usually look on Orbitz at prices, and then I go to the airline web site when I am ready to buy the ticket. I have noticed that if I keep searching on Delta, they tend to go up. The price going up does not bother me as much as, when the next day they change the offered routes

This was discussed a few weeks back Do Airlines Cheat Us By Saving Our IP Address? (by Eugegall Jan 9 2010 in Civil Aviation)

In summary, yes airlines have software that can dynamically change pricing based on repeated request for specific routes.
