BA Or VS A380, Who's First?

Fri Jan 29, 2010 12:50 pm

Having seen pics of the first LH A380 in the paintshop, which is going to be the first UK airline to get their hands on an A380 and when is this likely to be? I know there was talk of VS cancelling their order and of BA perhaps adding to theirs, did either situation actually happen?

BA plans atleast 1 by the 2012 London Olympics, Virgin had all these grand visions for teh A380 but SRB seems to be taking a more conservative track with A330-300 and 787-9 for the Virgin fleet.

Well BA may have slipped first delivery back to 2013, but actually there is a lot of mystery about whether VS will take their order (well previously on A.net anyway!)

Anyone have an update on VS status?

BA won't have its A380 for the Olympic Games in 2012 ... But they will definately have them before Virgin ...

VS and SRB made a lot of P.R with the A380 but that was all bla bla bla as usual with him ... I wouldn't be surprised to if VS would even actually never get it.

Why would VS cancel their order - to save money? They're doing OK at the moment aren't they, despite the current economic climate?. What routes were they planning to use the A380 on?

Incidentally, I'm looking at booking 4 Upper Class return seats from LHR to HK and SYD soon, as I've always liked the VS product and concept. However, it seems that there's no chance of any discounted tickets whatsoever as I've been told that loads on the route are almost always full...???  confused  Is this really the case or is there some crafty salesmanship going on? If the A340-600s are full on the kangaroo route, wouldn't a bigger aircraft make sense?

I flew on the route early December and it was packed! No spare seats in economy whatsoever and from boarding i could tell upper class was certainly very busy. Premium was also full. Mind you, dont forget the LHR-HKG leg used to be 2x daily but was chopped down to 1 daily due to the recession. Mind you, have i heard right that the 2nd daily is being re-instated?

I thought I read a few years ago that SRB said VS would never buy a quad jet again. Something about too much fuel consumption.

My bet is BA, and the A380 will look great in BA colours, I don't quite like all these all or mostly white ones ... LH, AF, SQ etc. ... someone needs a better paint scheme on the beast!

VS is in a bind, cancelling the A380 will be expensive for them. Rumour was that they would cancel for A350s in time. The recent A333 order was x6 replacing A346 orders still on the book and x4 leased. So they didn't replace the A380 orders, and while these are still in the order book there's no word or excitement at all about them. I've no doubt VS could use them at least on LGW-MCO, and fill them.

LGW-MCO

MAN-MCO too? Loads are good and they have increased flights over the last few seasons? Maybe not daily but on the busier days mid season?

Id like to think VS will get them. I choose to fly with them if i can, i like their service and have never had any problems. Also helps i have a lot of miles too so the incentive is there to stick with them.

Having done this route with VS in 2006 (and back to LHR again in 2007) I can tell you both flights were packed. As someone who isn't keen on Branson at all given his PR guff regarding Concorde, I have to say the service was good. However... the Virgin staff at Heathrow and Hong Kong I found to be incredibly rude. In Sydney, all was fine. And that goes for the travel in both directions.

I am back in Sydney again having flown in September on a Qantas A380 and I am MUCH more impressed with Qantas than I was with Virgin and much more impressed with the A380 than I was with the A340-600. I look forward to the A380 experience again on the way home in April. We flew via SIN too.

If I remember correctly, the service that goes on to SYD is an A340-600 whereas the LHR-HKG-LHR is an A340-300. I may be wrong...

As for BA getting theirs before VS, yes I believe so but they are both slated to receive theirs in 2013. If Branson cancels it's yet more evidence of Branson being all talk and no bollocks as he was with Concorde. He announced the order because at the time BA hadn't. Now that BA have, if VS cancel it'll go further to prove all the PR nonsense was exactly that, nonsense. All this talk of swimming pools and ridiculous things like that on board further proves Branson's head was in the clouds, and I don't mean with the help of his VS fleet or even a balloon.

Same aircraft. We only disembarked for some 30 mins before re-boarding. Maybe at one time it did?

And it would have nothing to do with the collapse of the world economy and the dire situation of the airline industry since the order was placed? Virgin Atlantic is not the only airline to have deferred orders on the aircraft.

Now I never said it was the ONLY reason the order would be cancelled did I... But Virgin have a history of doing things opposite to BA or having digs at them. The VS A380 order was made when BA hadn't (and VS pointed this out too!) and I find it quite funny and ironic that BA ordered the aircraft a long time after VS and will receive theirs before.

Obviously the economy isn't in a great position but it hasn't stopped Virgin ordering A330's recently has it? They might well be in lieu of them cancelling the A340 order but there's not quite so much PR fanfare from VS about this order as there was about the A380, is there. BA don't have A330's or orders for them but VS didn't point that out in their PR guff like they did about the A380. Why? Not high profile enough to get one up on BA.

I think you missed what I meant... The LHR-HKG-SYD-HKG-LHR is done by the A340-600, this is the one we both used and yes, there was only a short tie before reboarding the same aircraft. The other service, the LHR-HKG-LHR I think is (or was) done by the A340-300. I think.
