Just Booked My Last (?) DC-9 Flight

Sun Jan 31, 2010 2:52 am

So, if anyone is interested, I just bought what I figure is my last itinerary with a DC-9 involved. Since I do not travel DL much, I am assuming the -9s will be gone before I ride them again.

I even went out of my way to get on a -9 flight.

Trip is:
2/23
BOI-MSP XJ CR9
MSP-DTW D95
DTW-MCO 757

2/26
MCO-LGA M88
LGA-MSP 319
MSP-BOI CR9

Return is 14 hours. I wanted to go thru LGA since I have never been there lol. Plus, added cushiontime for watching and any dealys that will arise.

Anyway, my previous DC-9 trip was MSP-BIS also on a -50. Nice part of that was jetway was inop and we deplaned thru ventral stairs and entered the temp bag claim area directly. I enjoy stuff out of the ordinary.

Well, you all have a nice day!

I'm quite surprised that NYC is a valid connection point between BOI and MCO.

Valid routings on Delta between Orlando and Boise are as follows:

The DC-9-50s are supposed to be retired in 2013 along with the MD-88s. The -30s and -40s will be gone by October this year. Someone told me that the -40s are actually already gone... can anyone confirm this? I know they had seven left and only used them as subs, but my DTW-LGA in March says it's on a Boeing (Douglas) DC-9-40. Probably an error (like with the recent erroneous 753 flights), and the last two rows are blocked, so I'm betting we're gonna get a -30. It will be my second and perhaps final DC-9 flight. It's $10 more to go through DTW, but in this case it'll get me home quickest. I don't know when I'll be flying again (probably sometime next school year), so this could be it...

No, DL is has 7 DC-9-40 but has started to park 30s. I expect they will start pulling 40s soon.

No, While the fleet is going to get smaller, its not likely(gone by 2013). Now with a 737RS seeming to be getting pushed back I believe Delta is going to end up ordering more 737s once they get all the M90s they can.

Is there a chance that I may actually get on a -40? I'm on DL (wow... not NW. This is weird.) 7266 on March 6th, DTW-LGA.

From what i understand its pretty much a crap shoot. While i expect most if not all -40s to still to be around the way NW (and now DL) uses the 40s is if a D9S flight needs the extra seats they put a 40 on it. If a D95 flight needs less seats it becomes a 40. Delta doesn't say flight XXX will be for sure a 40. Thats why your flight has the last two rows blocked, because it could end up a 30. They sell seats for only two types 30(D9S) and 50s (D95).

I second this notion, not just because you have the opportunity to fly the grand ol' -9 again, but also because I enjoy seeing photos of the Boise Airport that aren't my own.

Gosh, I miss seeing the NW DC-9s here in Boise. Way better than the CRJ-900s they bring in today.

Boy that is a lot of routings. I count 14 of them. NYC is a point on 8 of them. 12 routings permit three segments. In this day and age with the DL's improved route network it should only allow 1 connection on this city pair. In my opinion these archaic routes encourage mileage runs like the "Mexican Hat Dance". Since DL only flies from BOI to MSP and SCL the only logical routing is ORL-MSP/SLC-BOI.

In routings with limited city pairings though (for example, only 1 or 2 flights a day on SLC-MCO, 3 flights on BOI-MSP) they will often allow a double connect to facilitate connections as necessary.

Plus, us FlyerTalk members like the crazy routings...last year I did a few MSP-ORD routings with SLC as a valid connection city (before they sadly yanked that away). Great way to get an extra 7000 miles round trip (4500 miles r/t vs. 1000 yields 3500 mile difference, plus Platinum bonus at 100%).

ROC-JFK-ROC gets me 1000 miles; for $10 more, ROC-DTW-LGA JFK-ROC gets me 1501 miles *AND* a DC-9. Last time I did this I ended up getting rerouted to JFK from DTW after a missed connection due to mx, so I originally got 1509 miles; add in a 10,000-mile loyalty bonus, 4000 miles and four $25 vouchers for my bag getting misplaced, 2500 miles plus a $75 eVoucher for the whole bad experience, and I basically paid $24.80 (well... $64.80 as I had to pay to check that bag each way. I should have tried to get refunded forand got 15,509 SkyMiles. AND a DC-9 too!

And I'm doing it all over again next month!

I've just booked my (last?) DC-9 flight too. Better still, it should be a DC-9 14, either msn 4 or 11!

I'm flying to Khartoum, Sudan tomorrow on EY/GF AUH-BAH-KRT. On friday I'm flying from Khartoum to Juba on Marsland Aviation and then Juba to Nairobi, Kenya with East African Safari Express - scheduled for a DC-9 14. The worst I can end up with is a F28
