Johannesburg Arrivals - Transfer Time Advices

Thu Feb 04, 2010 7:20 pm

i am trying to book a flight from the UK to windhoek and going through JNB is the best way it seems. For some reason it is cheaper to book the JNB WDH leg separately which means arrivals, passport, customs, baggage etc then re check in.

there is a flight 3hrs 30mins after i land but is this enough time so get through a major hub like JNB? having not been there for 9 years i am sdure it has changed alot.

i was recently in BKK and that took 90mins to go through the arrival process so advices are appreciated.

thanks

That's about the layover I end up with when I have to transit to WDH via JNB...sometimes on the same ticket/itinerary, sometimes not, depending on price, convenience, preference, etc. (I normally try to fly SW if I can...home country pride and all)

Also try getting to Frankfurt, and then FRA to WDH nonstop on SW?

Three and a half hours should be fine. If you can try and and use the same airline for LONJNB and JNBWDH you can do it with SAA and BA. Even though with separate tickets they are not compelled to help you if you misconnect they are usually more sympathetic if you are on the same airline. Have fun in Namibia it's a great place.

That is more than enough time. I had a 03h35min connection in JNB last week, connecting from SA's JFK flight to a domestic flight. I even had time for a long, relaxing shower, as well as time for spotting from SA’s domestic lounge.

When I faced a similar situation (JFK-JNB on AF, JNB-LVI on SA) I was able to interline my bags at JFK and simply went to the SA transit desk upon arrival at JNB. The agent checked me in, handed boarding pass, and I never had to clear customs, immigration, etc. - was just a transit passenger.

Pleased to say it went fine. The SA agent wanted to see the credit card used to purchase the ticket, which I had not taken on this trip. Took about 5 minutes longer but was able to check in.

Have a great time in Namibia.
