Earning Miles For Multiple Passengers

Sun Feb 07, 2010 2:48 am

There have been several times where I booked flights to Europe for my family and I earned miles for one ticket. Is it possible to earn miles for multiple passengers? Or, is it that miles are rewarded only once per itinerary?

If so, couldn't you just bypass this by booking everyone's ticket separately and entering your number each time? I've always thought about this but never inquired.

I wouldn't think that the person flying MUST be the person earning miles. My brother has booked flights several times and entered my number, even though it was him who was flying.

Nowadays as far as i know, you only can earn miles on your trips and if your family wants to do it, they will need to open their own accounts. This is one of the reasons that FF nowadays become a very interesting business for airlines.

In the other hand, you still can use your miles for other person.

By the way, we're transferred your thread to Travel, Polls & Preferences.

Family members or companions will need their own Frequent Flyer account with the airline but every passenger on the itinerary can earn miles as long as the fare qualifies. I've traveled numerous times with my family on one ticket/reference code and always earned the miles as long as it wasn't a reward ticket.

Where it can get interesting is if you and someone else in your family have the same name. I know quite a few families with a father and son who have the same name and so they use the same account (makes obtaining status easier). Not sure how it works if they're both on the same flight though.

Emirates is the only airline I know of that allows for other family members' miles to be credited to one account. However it's only 20% of the miles. But still good if they don't fly again and you do.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

My father and I actually share the same name. Whenever he flies to Europe, I can add the miles to my account. However, earning the miles and redeeming the miles doesn't have to be in the account holder's name, does it? As I mentioned, my brother has booked his own flights but uses my mileage account to earn miles for me.

It's 20% of the miles for each family member, but 100% for the account holder? If they were all flying together, would it be the normal 100% + the additional 20% for each flying family member?

Well what happens if you do this:

Should give a problem to various degrees:
Either, those miles just will not show up in the FF-sccount.
Or, if the e-ticket is stored under this FF-number, he actually might be denied boarding, as name of the FF-account does not match the actual pax. Nowadays, I would not risk this especially when flying within or to the U.S. as some time to be spent with the TSA (or worse) can be something to happen ...

Perhaps the miles were just not deposited to the account. I could have sworn he entered my number a few times...

Anyway, so technically, although likely not legal, I could book flights to Europe this summer for both me and my dad on separate itineraries, but earn double the miles?
