Qualities Of LH Vs LX On Long Haul Flights

Tue Feb 09, 2010 4:48 pm

Hello all,

I have a decision to make between LH and LX from South Africa to Europe. How does these two carriers' premium products (Business-and First Class) compare to one another?

If you have experience on this matter, could you kindly share it with me?

Thank you,

SA7700

Personally, I like LH's C Class, but I cant comment on LX's service. However, other forum members seems to be saying LX offers one of the best premium cabins in the world, so you may as well fly them both and try for yourself!

For what I have heard from a friend of mine, flying regularly on LH and LX business long haul, he prefers LX as service is much better.

But maybe best solution: LH and LX offer combinable fares, so why not try both?

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I really appreciate the feedback. I'm leaning slightly towards LX, but may very well combine the two carriers as you suggested.

The new LX F and C products outshine LH by far.
Actualy while I like LH in many ways, their premium products are aging and is falling behind competitors(esp F class).

I wont say their C class is ageing though, but i agree, LX should be better!

With regards to FRA (LH) and ZRH (LX) as transiting airports, it seems as if ZRH may be the "better" choice?

Thank you

LX's new C and F are indeed better products for sure, but he wants to fly from South Africa.
LX uses 343's there, so no new product yet (but still very good as it is).

And indeed, ZRH is a very smooth transit airport.

ZRH offers smooth transfers including a train ride from E-gates to A/B-gates.
FRA can be a maze but once one knows his way around is okay to connect.

MUC would be the airport having the least hassle with connections (but many flights within Europe use remote stands).

That is so true. It has been more than 10 years since my last encounter with FRA.

Okay, so LH long haul "has dropped out of the race", with SA taking its place (via FRA). Flying with SA, drastically reduces my layover time in JNB on my way back from Europe. LX has excellent prices, although I will have to endure longer transit times From Europe to South Africa.

I hope to make my final decision by tomorrow morning.

Keep well, SA7700

Hello there!

I flew SA to-and from the USA a month ago and they have a very nice premium product. The catering could have been better, but the full flat beds (180°) with a 73” pitch and duvets made up for that.

The final decision is due in ± 6 hours time.

Keep well,

SA7700

There is a review on SA's Business Class product in current issue March 2010 of magazine Airways for a flight on a A343 from JNB to EZE. Appears to be not yet online ( airwaysmag.com ).
The author praises the service in all respects.

Longhaul examples

GRU/FRA/AND OLD: Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed), China - Hong Kong">HKG/FRA/GRU LH C Class> You know what you get. Consistent good quality service, modern seats.
GRU/ZRH/AND OLD: Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed), China - Hong Kong">HKG C AND AND OLD: Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed), China - Hong Kong">HKG/ZRH/GRU F> C Class not as comfy as LH yet service similar in quality. The chocolates served after meal service are a nice touch but it's cheaper to buy a box of Lindt at ZRH airport than to pay extra $$ for LX C class only to get Lindt.
F Class is naturally fantastic, Swiss does their job very well and indeed is a better service than LH's outdated cabin. However, on the 340 service LX uses between AND OLD: Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed), China - Hong Kong">HKG/ZRH/GRU, the seats are not as comfy as LH's F on the 744 (used this service FRA/NRT).

Lounges> GRU and AND OLD: Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed), China - Hong Kong">HKG are the same no matter if LH or LX.
Lounge at ZRH in C is not very nice too large, too noisy, too many rooms, seems unorganized, prefer LH at FRA even if assortment is reduced.
F lounge at ZRH is fantastic but cannot beat the F lounge at AND OLD: Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed), China - Hong Kong">HKG.

Yet, best C class of all was the former Classe A of Air Comet... that was unbeatably good!

Have a nice and safe trip!
