Airlines With Most Widebody Quads

Thu Feb 11, 2010 4:16 am

Last Sunday, browsing through the in-flight Lufthansa magazine, I noticed that LH has no less that 79 wideboby quads in operation: 29 744s, 26 343s, 24 346s. An astonishing number IMHO. I imagine that no other airline has more. Is there anyone that comes close? Has there been an airline in the past operating so many large 4-holers? Thanks.

BA has a large number too.

QF has a few, but not nearly as many as they used to. QF held the distinction of being the only carrier to operate ONLY B747 aircraft (and nothing else).

Indeed! Although some of these may replace 744s, I guess.

I would say Emirates have the most wide-bodies in the industry, at the moment they have around 140 wide-body. More than 2/3 of it is Boeing 777 (all models). Not to mention the confirmed orders by EK.

Yes, but, right now they only seem to have 30 quads: 8 388s, 6 744s, 6 343s, 10 345s.

I did not know EK has 744s. Where do they fly to?

What about Virgin Atlantic? Where do they stand with their A340s and B747s?

EK does not fly passenger 747's. Emirates Sky Cargo operates the following 747 types:
- 4 747-400F's
- 3 747-400ERF's
- 10 747-8F (ORDERS)

In recent memory (late 2007, before the BCF conversions started), JAL operated nearly that many 747s alone, a total of 77 I believe, not to mention 767, 777, and previously MD-11 fleets.

BA have about 50 747-400s with some in storage at VCV and CWL.

Orders for 12 380s

AF have 33. Thought the 744s are on the way out.
SQ have 23 but same applies.
QF 30 same applies.
IB 32.
KE 22 + 23F
VS 31

So yeah, LH are winning by quite a margin.

Add Swiss's A340s (~15) and it becomes even more impressive!

On a related topic, CL, LX and SN also have a vast number of BAe146s/Avro RJs (~90), so the LH group is definitely the place for 4 engined planes

VS' fleet only consists four engined aircrafts, in total 37:

6x A343
19x A346
12x B744

Sorry to hijack the thread but who has the most widebodies generally? Is it DL?

DL: 143
AA: 120
BA: 117

Can anyone think of anyone else?

What i was getting at is that i feel DL and AA are cheating a bit as they have so many 767s. Yes the 767 is a widebody but a very small one.

EK's smallest is the A332.

FedEx have the most widebodies, with 244 in service and another 50 in storage. UPS have 135 and DHL must have quite a few too.

I think JL must have been the largest for quite a few years. They were by far the largest 747 customer with 108 deliveries of almost all 747 models except the SP. At one time I think they had more than 80 in service simultaneously before they started retiring them. I think they expect to retire their last 744 by about 2015 or 2016.

JL's 747 factory deliveries by model:

100 - 8
100SR - 12
200 - 24
200F - 7
300 - 9
300SR - 4
400 - 34
400D - 8
400F - 2

Total 108

Pan Am also operated almost 60 747s, and until the mid 1980s most were still in service.

How odd.

The OP asked for widebodied quads, and people start quoting airlines operating no quads at all (AA, FX). This ain't about widedbodies gentlemen, it's about quads. And in that area, Lufty rules.

One could thus argue that quads = profit
