Young Fresh Pilot Looking For A Start!

Thu Feb 11, 2010 7:20 pm

Hey All,

I am currently a student attending at the Moncton Flight College in Canada. I will be graduating with an Aviation Diploma in April and right now I am just looking for companies for my first job.

I will be graduating with 205 hours total time. This includes CPL, Multi Rating, IFR rating, Frozen ATPL and 35 hours on King Air Simulator.

Does anyone know of companies that are hiring now or soon for young fresh pilots like myself?

Any advise would help.

Thank you,

Kevin

Get in line. There are many pilots on the street right now with thousands of hours of experience.

My advice, get your instructor ratings and build some time that way.

Out here its a tough time after the upsurge in 2006 to the downslide in 2009....Its been a recovery 2010.....But likely another year before hiring & expansions began again.

With so many experienced pilots on the street, I'm not sure you even have a good shot at crop dusting or aerials. CFI is probably your only option unless you've got a rich uncle who can afford to get you in at Gulfstream Academy.

Gulfstream Academy.

BLAH. Thumbs down to that.

It'll get you a job (nix that, PAYING for your work), technically...I mean you'll have passengers in the back and stripes on your monkey suit...but it's no way to learn how to fly. Throwing money at a problem in order to fix it is rarely, if ever, the way to go.

I listened to a poor EYW controller trying to tutor a Gulf Flight over the radio a few weeks ago. It was really sad...and pathetic.

But not with just 200 hours TT. They don't hire as much as they used to, and there are plenty of available pilots, so they can afford to be more demanding. F/O position with QR, one of the few actually hiring, requires 2,000 TT now. G9 is happy with "only" 1,500 hours TT but wants an A320 TR too.

If they were hiring, AirNet would be his best bet. No specific TT required.

I'm in this boat too, get in line.

I work as a CFI now but I lose that job come May. Even these jobs are getting harder and harder to come across.

I suggest looking into military options. Also, consider pursuing jobs overseas.

Yeah, should have mentioned it wasn't going to be a popular option with many and that the benefits of going that way are... disputed at best, if not downright challenged.
Disclosure: Don't know enough to have an opinion about the merits, I just know it is an option.

That is what I would do. I don't understand, in the state of the airline industry is like now, why we have so, so, so many people who just got their pilots license and expecting that they will automatically land a job with someone somewhere... there are so many unemployed airline pilots out on the street now its nearly impossible for a fresh pilot to ever get a job with a carrier nowadays (except Mesa probably...).

Personally, I wouldn't want to fly with an airline. The job isn't what it used to be anymore.... the glitter and glam days are over, unfortunately. I just don't see the point.

Maybe, but that decreases overall quality if everbody becomes flight instructor. I had 5 instructors to get ally my ratings and only 1 cared to explain all there is to it. Others were just bulding on their time

Good luck out there! My fiance was a CRJ F/O and has over 5000 hours, he got furloughed about a year ago and has applied to countless companies (corporate and commercial) and has not even gotten so much as one interview yet! Not many of his furloughed friends have had any luck out there either  I sure hope things turn around in this industry really soon, there are so many pilots on the streets right now.

Nobody. You basically are worthless in the industry unless you got 1500hrs or more, and even then. Take this from somebody who has 300hrs, a CFII ticket, and has been looking for a flying job for over a year.

CFI at first. Avoid regionals to build jet time. Go corporate for that.

Waaaay back in the line.

Negative.

Quoting AirframeAS (Reply 13):

You have no guarantee of a flying job with the military. You could be flying a desk for all you know as a career. And when all said is done, you won't have that many hours after 6-10 years of service as if you did a CFI job or other flying job for that amount of time. And, nowadays airlines are picking civilians first. This told to me personally by several ex-military pilots and airline hiring personnel.

Get hours any way you can. But don't sell your soul to do it, otherwise you're devaluing the profession and screwing all the other pilots over. But still, you need hours, because very little else matters, so get them.

That's pretty much the message these days. And yes, it is extremely contradictory.

APPLY APPLY APPLY!!! and do it WORLDWIDE, send out hundreds, thousands of applications, be a tiger, fight your way thru! I'm sure someone in this world will give you a flying job, be open to moving, adventure, and take whatever comes up!

Staying in Canada and looking around localy won't get you far but try there anyways.

all the best
