Why Can't I Find A One-stop MTY-SDQ Itinerary?

Tue Feb 23, 2010 10:50 pm

My boss asked me to help him find an itinerary with one-stop from MTY to SDQ next Tuesday, March 2, and I'm shocked that I can't find one. It seems they share the same U.S. airlines, but the wrong connecting city:

CO: MTY-IAH, but only EWR-SDQ
AA: MTY-DFW, but only MIA-SDQ
DL: MTY-ATL, but only JFK-SDQ

And then I checked the other regional majors, only to discover that:

Neither AM nor MX serve SDQ, while serving MTY; and
Neither CM, LR, AV, TA or even CU serve MTY, while serving SDQ.

How is this possible? Am I missing something? Are there any similar-sized regional city-pairs like these that can't be reached in one stop?

Help!

(edit: DL does fly ATL-SDQ, but not on Tuesdays, and even on the days when they do fly, it would mis-connect with the in-bound MTY flight)

MSN-EYW. EYW can only be reached via MCO, MIA, FLL, TPA, ATL, CLT, APF, and RSW, none of which are served directly from MSN.

There must be many markets like that. I believe GDL is the 2nd largest city in Mexico and I don't think you can go from GDL to SDQ without 2 connections. There must be almost zero traffic in markets like MTY-SDQ so why would airlines give them priority when designing their schedules?

Perhaps this "do it yourself" itinerary would work (if your boss does not mind a long layover at JFK):

MX # 6 MTY-JFK (9:30-14:30) $339
B6 # 827 JFK-SDQ (20:39-1:51) $208

MTY's economy is very oriented towards being an industrial centre that serves the southwestern and central US almost exclusively. Its air service reflects that.

SDQ (being a capitol city) is much more economically integrated into into Latin America and the DR , like most other Carribbean nations, has heavy VFR traffic to the northeastern US and Florida but very few economic connections the rest of the US. Its air service reflects that.

Thus its not all that surprising that they have very few (no?) destinations in common.
