45 Minute Connection In LHR (from AA To OK)

Tue Feb 23, 2010 11:00 pm

On March 7th/8th I will be traveling BOS-LHR-PRG. I have two different reservations one for BOS-LHR and one LHR-PRG. My flights are:
03/07/10 American Airline FLT 108 BOS-LHR Dept: 7:20pm Arrive: 6:50am+1
03/08/10 Czech AIrline FLT 653 LHR-PRG Dept: 7:35am Arrive: 10:30am

I have 45 minutes to make the connection is that possible at LHR.I am traveling in business class so I will be one of the first off in LHR I have traveled to LHR many times but never connected their, I know it is a very big airport.
Also what are my chances of getting AA to check my bags all the way through since I have two different reservations?

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

I would say there is almost no chance you will make that connection, unless the AA flight was 15 or 20 minutes early, and even then you are pushing your luck. AA uses T3 at LHR and OK uses T4 which is on the opposite side of the airport and requires a bus trip through a tunnel under the runways. And you have to clear security and LHR security lines are often long and slow-moving. And expecting the AA flight to be on time is being optimistic with the usual LHR congestion and many flights having to hold for varying periods before landing.

I wouldn't even want to plan that connection if I had 90 minutes between the flights but that would be my bare minimum. That's also one of the busiest times of the day for connections at LHR with dozens of longhaul flights arriving early in the morning and a high percentage of passengers making connections.

My family managed to pull off a 50 minute LHR connection granted we had to run most of the way. We flew BA to EI and we arrived in terminal 5 and had to get our bags go through immigration and then over to terminal 3. We were the last people on the plane. I would say give yourself at least 2 hours to connect.

After my experience connecting international to international in MEX, I also suggest that you do not take this flight if it only has a 45 minute connection time. Also, even if there's interlining between AA and OK, chances are that even if you officially miss your connection (due to end of boarding) but are still allowed to board nevertheless, that you're luggage will go missing. I suggest you take a later flight for a more comfortable margin, specifically a minimum 2 hours. I personally suggest at least 3 hours, especially if chances are that you'll get stuck during your transit, e.g. due to long lines at passport control (if passport control is required for connecting passengers, that I don't know), possible customs control if the luggage isn't checked through and therefore need to do the entire transfer landside, and in your case also the terminal change.

There shouldn't be any passport control at LHR since the UK isn't part of the Schengen area. There will be passport control at PRG since it's the first point of arrival in the Schengen area. If the connection was at AMS/FRA/CDG/ZRH etc., passport control would be there but not at PRG.

I have MISSED 3 hour connections at LHR. I would never book 45 minutes there. 45 minutes is marginal at good airports like DIA.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail, this is borderline impossible. If you were Usain Bolt with a map of the place, then maybe. Otherwise, I don't think you're going to.

Zero chance with illegal connection like yours. A legal connection would be minimum 90mins probably longar and then AA would check the bag thru.

Do do this. In January I had a 2h connection at LHR on my way from ZRH to HKG (on LX and NZ) I had no problems in getting my onward flight but my bags arrived four days later at my final destination....
Fall 2016: ZRH-TLV-ZRH on A3 or LX in Y, ZRH-LCY-ZRH on LX in Y
Spring 2017: ZRH-LCY-ZRH-SFO-LAS-LAX-ZRH on LX in Y,C and F

AA wont thru check onto a non alliance airline (IE Oneworld) as the booking on the other carrier is on a different itinerary/ticket. This means you will have to collect your luggage and transfer to T4 using the Heathrow Connect train. By the time you get there, check in for your next flight will have closed, and the plane may have even left.

If AA for any reason are late, they will not help with regards to the onward flight as AA only have to get you to LHR on the ticket you have with them and that is as far as their contract with you goes.

Why did you book such a short connection?

As previous posters said, no it's impossible. Even if you were checked through (BP + luggage), it would be very challenging. I think you could be able to have your luggage checked until PRG as AA and OK should have an interline agreement but AA will never give you the OK BP. If you don't have your luggage tagged to PRG, it means (as you said) that you need to go through immigration in LHR, to collect your bags, to change terminal and at check-in at OK counters. As the limit check-in time for EU flights is generally 30 min prior to departure, this gives you only 15 min to do all this

Except that if the bags are not checked until PRG, he has to collect them in LHR before re-checking, so this means passport control in both LHR and then PRG.
