People Express Memories

Friends-

How many of us remember this 1980's carrier ? Don Burr's creation was certainly a novel one, but I always wondered what their balance sheets look like.

What are your memories ?
I love the smell of jet fuel in the morning

My first job in the industry was as a PEX CSA in CLT. The people were fun but most in the outstations were very inexperienced (I didn't realize how much so until many years later). As a CSA I did pretty much everything from checking in people at the ticket counter to boarding the aircraft, cleaning the aircraft, etc. I remember that I got trained to marshal aircraft (ex-LH 731s mostly at CLT), but can't remember if everyone did or not. I got to work a lot on the ramp, and nobody wore hearing protection except me (I don't know if it was required and disregarded or if it was not required) with my trusty EAR yellow foam earplugs, which I had for being around the flightline at the FBO when I was taking lessons in a PA-28 from Southeast Airmotive. CLT was a great place to learn to fly then; it was a big PI hub (I still miss PI), but I liked getting used to ATC communications and controller interaction early in my Private certificate.

PEX was fun and I learned a lot, but was a very quirky place to work: remember that pax actually paid for their flights onboard the aircraft, which resulted in a lot of police meeting flights for inability to pay. Stuff like that made them a not-ready-for-primetime player, and even though I had fun there for two years or so, I was ready to leave when I did.

Yeah I remember the cart with the credit card slider..lol...I flew them in the early 80's from EWR to JAX I think the one way fare was like 50 bucks..I flew them again from EWR to BWI I think that one was like 19 dollars IIRC.

It sounds as if they utilized you all to the hilt. I have read also that they would cross-department-train employees as well especially the flight attendants to customer service. I wondered, a bit tongue-in-cheek how pilots would work in customer service ?

Striclty from what I read, Don Burr did create something that was vastly needed in air travel at the time. Giving a re-birth to a dump of a terminal in EWR and flying mass quantities of people in and out of it must have been a daunting task for all involved.

The first time I saw People Express was when I was A kid in the 80's. My father took me on a trip to LAX ,and I saw a 747 with that face design on the tail, park at terminal 2. I believe, I thought that People Express was an all 747 airline like Tower Air, but I learned later that they had 727s. There was a 747 video I had in the early, early 90's, which had clips of People Express 747s cockpit in it. The first half was music and the second half was the pilots. I remember reading, that the first woman 747 captain flew for People Express. She made captain in the early 80's and was in her 30's. She likely in her late 50's or early 60's now.

Never flew them but remember their early days here at LAX with people camping out in the terminal for almost half a day to catch their flights.

While they failed at the end, I think they were a pretty revolutionary and a important part of post deregulation industry and made air-travel much easier and affordable for many while also early promoter of many concepts such as staff cross-training, basically ticketless travel and purchase on board food items which are common today.

A lot of those videos were made by a People Express pilot named Paul Havis. Who went on to fly for CO..I flew with a CO pilot once who told me his co workers call him 'Hollywood Havis".. The female 747 capt you are referring to there are actually 2 female 747 capts there who flew tha same day..Lynn Ripplemeyer who flew from EWR to LGW and Beverly Burns who flew from EWR to LAX. Both had started their careers as flight attendants I believe Beverly Burns was an AA flt att and Lynn Ripplemeyer was TWA.

I flew with them once - seems like a different lifetime - a long time ago - from New York (can't remember if it was JFK or EWR to the Bay Area (can't remember if it was SFO or rather Oakland) and probably a night flight. I hated it. It was awful so awful that I want to remember as little about it as I possibly can. Yes, it was cattle transport, some old 747-200 I think and we had to pay for the flight once we got on board. I did it once because it was cheap but I never did the other way. I bought me another plane ticket on a regular airline, I think it was PanAm and it felt so much better....
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

I never flew the 747's I flew on them several times on the 737-200. But your right it was cattle car. Getting the 747's is what actually killed that airline. Grew to fast too soon.

USAir does go on record of killing two fabulous airlines. Piedmont and PSA had stellar reputations for service, that drowned into the abyss of a conglomeration.
