Smallest Aircraft To Operate Sched Flights?

Sun Mar 07, 2010 11:08 pm

Im talking about within the last 10 years or so, not back in the pioneering days of air travel - or helicopters.

Yesterday, the regular scheduled flights by KD Air from YVR to Qualicum Beach were operated by their Cessna 172 instead of the usual PA31 Navajo. Even then, one of the flights only had a 66.666666666% load factor!

Any other examples where light aircraft have operated scheduled flights??

Cape Air operates numerous flights each day using C402's! I'd put them in the light/small category along with the Navajo and Skyhawk.

For many years McKnight Airlines operated a Piper PA28-260 six seat, single engined aircraft twice a day between Deniliquin and Wagga Wagga in the state New South Wales in Australia.

It's purpose was to connect with flights to SYD & MEL in Wagga. The terrain flown over was as flat as a billard table, it was often flown at just 1000'.

I flew a Piper PA-34 Seneca operated by a small outfit named Commutair. They flew from IAH to a bunch of nearby cities. I flew them from HOU-IAH to connect with Texas International. It had four seats (two facing two) and no co-pilot. It was a little longer ago than 10 years, but anyway...

Plenty of commuters used Piper Navajos in the 70's and 80's, and as I recall they seated 7. Cessna 402's carried about the same number. The airlines I flew that had them are pretty much forgotten now - Davis Airlines (IAH-CLL) and Ocean Airways (HVN-ACY-BWI).

While not the smallest, Sylt Air in Germany has a Cessna 421C for their flights.

Lydd Air in the UK operate scheduled flights to France with either a PA-31 or Baron, which have 9 and 5 seats respectively.

Sylt is fun because, I believe, when you book the flight, you don't know what you will fly on - they send the type of plane based on the number of passengers, not vice versa like most airlines. I might be using them this summer from Hamburg to Sylt and it's an interesting airline.
