Poll: Have You Flown On A MD-80?

Tue Mar 09, 2010 1:38 pm

Poll Question:

Have you flown on a MD-80?

I have flown on MD-80 on many occasions. American, TWA, Continental, and Delta. I find the MD-80s a very good aircraft.

Yes, so have I, several thousand times actually. Then again, I'm an MD-80 pilot, so I guess that increases my odds just a bit!

3, maybe 4 times w/ML (my 1st MD-80 ride back in 1990), US (twice, back when they still flew them) and DL (last summer).

I was very impressed w/the inside of the ML MD-80; it was my first flight in over 11 years and the first itme that BOS was NOT my home airport. The flight was my first PHL-BOS flight.

The inside of the DL MD-88 I was on seemed to be more nicely appointed and had bigger overhead bins than the US MD-80s.

I have not flown on an MD-80, but I have flown on a DC-9, MD-90, and 717, all in the past 15 months too. Guess I've caught the less common models in the family. I try to fly on a T-tail any chance I get.

Not very often, but I have taken two flights on MD-88s with Delta several years ago, and four MD-83 flights on Alaska just a few months before they retired them.

I have flown the MD-80 many, many times........it is a great aircraft and the sound of those PW JT8D's is awesome. My favorite row to sit in is 29-30. Delta's, my airline of choice, are in great condition and the upgraded interiors are nice. I am flying on a Spanair MD-87 from VLC-MAD this summer, my first time on that type.

My first Mad Dog was AA MD82 N7532A, DFW-PHX. Does anybody happen to know if it's still in service? Last photo of it is from 2008.

More recently, JK MD87 EC-KAZ, MAD-PMI. That was a ride and a half. They're always hella' fun to fly on!

MadDog? A zillion times.
DC-9? A zillion plus 1.

I went through the worst clear air turbulence of my 60 years as a passenger on a DC-9, all flights on the route were canceled after we landed, we could not climb above 16000 and could not cruise over 250kts all the way. There was marginal control of the aircraft all the way until we went below about 2000. Tough and beautiful bird; Douglas tough.

MD81 - SAS
MD82 - Bulgarian Air Charter
MD83 - flyNordic
MD87 - SAS
717 - Spanair/AeBal

And slept a night aboard an SK MD90 in Oslo back in... 2006(?) at the OFKL flightsim-LAN.

Have to say that these birds are better suited for flying people around, than accommodating them overnight though...

Flown AA super 80s many times. They are probably my favorite for configuration of the type, but have never liked the lack of IFE on those birds. The DL M88s are okay. Would prefer a 738 or a 757 any day of the week.

If people are including DC-9s and 717s...

Flown 23 of 25 Midwest 717s
Flown 11 Midwest Express DC-9s (including the second one off the line!   )
I also flew on -9s with TWA in the 1990s and Northwest in 2003.

Few AA694 YYC-DFW and AA2081 DFW-YYC on the MD-83, or as I like to call them, the "McDeath Tube".

Even in F, the things showed their age. Seats were torn, reading light didn't work (thankfully, it was a daytime flight), that sort of deal. One of my travel companions on AA694 thought that the thing would 'fall apart' over Nebraska...how funny.

Have I flown an MD-80? As an AA FF, the question is more like, when haven't I flown an MD-80. Not often, it doesn't seem like.

I have flown MD-80 with AA, CO and DL in the past. Also DC-9 with NW and YX. Think that's it. Definitely AA far more than anyone else though.

DC9/MD80s are by far my most favourite ACs! Those rocket-like take-offs...    I was lucky enough to experience some flights in the cockpit, most if not all of them on AY. Other flights were on SR, DL and Nouvelair.

Proudly flown:
DC9-41/-51
MD81
MD82
MD83
MD87
MD90

Just realising, I missed 88...
