6.5-hour Connection At JFK!

Wed Mar 17, 2010 11:39 am

Hello all!

I'm flying through JFK in April, connecting from LHR to BGR with Delta. Only thing is that, due to lots of DL schedule changes, we now have about six and a half hours of connecting time in JFK.

Do any of you have good recommendations for what we could do in that time? Stay in Terminals 2-3? Go outside of the airport (if it is possible) ?

Sorry if this is a daft question - my longest layover has only ever been a couple of hours before, so I don't really know what to expect! Anyway, thank you for any help from those in the know!

Don't worry, due to the runway work, you will end up with a pretty tight connection

6.5 hours...well first take down any possible delays, customs, baggage transfer....you're down to 4.5 at most. This doesn't really give you much time to get into the city and back...you could do it, but it might not be worth it unless all you would want to do is walk around to stretch after the flight.

6.5 hours at JFK? Lord, shoot me now.
Rent a car and drive to Bangor. If you don't get lost, it's only about a 7-hour drive...instead, you're going to be sitting around JFK (the thought makes the hair on theback of my neck stand up) for 6.5 hours, followed by an almost 2 hour flight. Drive, and you'll get there quicker.

6.5 hrs in JFK in Terminal 2/3..... Good luck!  But if you want, you could take a taxi to Manhattan or take the subway and maybe take a pic in Times square

Haha... yup I'm definitely in agreement that staying in the terminal(s) would be a bad idea, so am planning to visit Manhattan.

Can somebody please recommend which mode of transport to take? What exactly should I do upon arrival at JFK from London? How long does the taxi/subway take? Will traffic be a problem? I'm just a little bit paranoid in case we get stuck on the road or something?

Maybe I should have looked into this... flights are all booked now, but I'll look into it if I make a return trip!

IF you take the subway, it takes about 45min-1hr to get to Manhattan if you take subway/airTrain. It'll take longer if you travel on weekends because fewer trains are running on weekends. I recommend taking the subway, you wouldn't worry about traffic. New York traffic is really really bad, especially if you pass through Queens. BTW, if your worry about directions, there are alot of maps that can help u with directions. If you wanna go to Times Square, take the airTrain to Jamaica Station then take the E train to 42nd Street-Port Authority bus terminal. From there, just follow the signs in the subway station and you'll get there...if you wanna go to Ground Zero, its the last stop of the E train. As a New Yorker, and you having a very limited time in New York City, I suggest that you should go to Times Square

If going to Midtown, taking the subway is an absolutely horrible idea. The A train from Howard Beach to Madison Square Garden takes about 50 minutes minimum. The LIRR from Jamaica station is a 20 minute ride to Penn Station. During the day, there are often trains every 10 minutes or so from Jamaica to NYP. It's well worth the extra couple of dollars to take the LIRR over the A train simply because of the time savings and the comfort.

Also, taking the E train from Jamaica to Ground Zero is not the way to go at all - the only time I'd consider taking the A train is to go to Lower Manhattan. For Ground Zero, taking the A train to Broadway/Nassau and walking the less-than-quarter mile down Fulton St. to the site.

The sky train is fun to ride around between terminals. Also, two years ago, I was flying Northwest on a domestic flight from JFK to DTW, which departed from NW's gate in the international terminal. Emirates Airlines provided free wi-fi around their gate area, which I was able to log onto. I was able to spend all of my time there on EK's wi-fi, even though I was a NW passenger!

Thanks guys... Okay, so if I'm planning to head to Ground Zero I take the A train from the airport (?) to Broadway/Nassau...?

It will be on a Saturday by the way.

From the Delta terminals, you would do the following:

You will arrive at Terminal 3 (most likely; slim chance of T4). You'll clear customs/immigration, then follow the signs for AirTrain.

Go up to the AirTrain station, hop on a train that is going to Howard Beach station (the train will be on the outer track, closer to the terminal - two trains stop on this track, one to Jamaica and one to Howard Beach - they are well-announced, grab the Howard Beach one). Ride that AirTrain to the end of the line.

You will need to purchase a MetroCard when you get off the train at Howard Beach. It's $5 to get off of AirTrain, plus another $2.25 to enter the subway. You can pay by credit card for this. Only the A train stops at Howard Beach, so you would just stay on that train to Broadway/Nassau. Get off there and walk up Fulton Street to Ground Zero. There are a number of restaurants in Lower Manhattan as well, so you could grab a late lunch or early dinner before heading back to JFK (if you do dinner, I'd want to be on a train at 600p at the latest for a 735p departure to BGR).

Given the schedule change, I would ask DL for a different flight. Looking at the JFK-BGR timetable, I don't see any non-stops. What is the full routing?

Thank you so much - I'm going to print out your instructions and enjoy a nice meal in Manhattan!

It is LHR-JFK-BGR... As I believe, the direct JFK-BGR flights end pretty soon on in April, as when we return we have to go through DTW instead.
