Business Class, BA Vs CX?

Wed Mar 24, 2010 6:58 am

Hi all,

I am planning a trip to SIN and HKG later this year and have the option of either BA or CX traveling in business. Both offer a full flat bed, CX with the herringbone layout and BA with the face-to-face, back-to-front layout (whatever you want to call it).

Both carriers seem to have strong points and also points of concern. Eg, some say the CX herringbone is claustrophobic with the high walls on either side and I will have a travel partner so will want to be able to talk to them, but with BA one does have to sit backwards which can be bothersome for some.

So from all of you out there with experience in either, or even better both, could you share those experiences with me to help me make a decision here.

Thanks

Depends on how much of a premium you place on having long or frequent conversations with your fellow traveller(s). With the CX herringbone, one of the passengers will have to stand up and either have a brief chat while standing, or sit at the other's seat footrest which is doable and not that bad for 5-10 minutes. The seats are also surrounded by divisions on either side and feel pretty narrow, at least visually. The other thing with the herringbone is that regardless of what seat you get its hard to look out the window, if you're big into that.

If however, you plan on lying flat and sleeping or resting in that position most of the flight, then the herringbone seats on CX are actually very comfortable and spacious. So they're actually better for an overnight long haul than a shorter or daytime flight.

Seating positions aside, I'd go with CX - generally more refined service and catering. And newer, sleeker look & feel in the cabin, particularly when comparing each airlines' B744s. Not the warmest of crews on CX, but very professional nonetheless.

In either case, try to get seats in the upper deck, which generally has a more private and less crowded configuration.

I've done both and would go BA. I really like their Club World product. If you are on a 744 and can get seat 64A or 64K (upstairs) they are the best seats in the house - private and quiet, they are your own little sancturary, as no one can see you and no one will disturb you in these seats. They are particuallry terrific if you are travelling alone.

If you choose an aisle seat do be warned that most aisle seats serve as access to the window seats. Don't worry about the sitting backwards - aside from feeling slightly strange on take off, once airborne you wouldn't know you were facing backwards or forwards.

I did find the CX layout too narrow and claustrophobic and would avoid it in the future. If for no other reason than the fact that all you can see when you are lying down are other pasenger's dirty socks!

The only complaint I'd have about BA is that their food has really fallen recently - I have had better meals in Economy than BA's Club World recent efforts. I flew them in January and the fare was basic chickenbeef or beefchicken mush. I remember also the cheese plate - it came to me, stone cold, all wrapped in cling film. Absolutely appalling for a premium cabin. Apparently though they did have catering issues from some locations earlier in the year, so maybe it has been solved now.
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

From my experience, you are better off with the BA ones if you are traveling with someone... I love the CX ones, though...and service is much better too...all from my experience...

On BA is is always advisable to try and take the last row of CW in a given area for that reason.

It didn't bother me at all.
Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

Yes, the socks thing is a herringbone negative. Although that's what you see when your sitting, not lying down.

Again, it all depends on how much weight you give to certain factors. If you want to interact socially a lot during flight, go with BA due to layout. If you want to sleep and place a premium on better food options/service/IFE, then go with CX.

One thing BA has going for it too is terminals/lounges - they have a better set up at T5 than CX does. Whereas even if you fly with BA you'll still get to use the same terminal and the award-winning CX lounge at HKG.
