KLM MD-11 Flights Summer 2010 & Beyond

Tue Mar 30, 2010 12:45 pm

Hi All,

I've decided in recent weeks that it really is time to start logging some of the aircraft that I've not flown on before. So, I had booked myself a flight on an Jetstream 31 (only for Highland Airways to fold), and I now have an ERJ.135 flight booked for May, so hopefully that survives. But, one type I am that I am missing is the illusive MD-11.

As someone that's done almost all of his long haul flying on British Airways over the years, I haven't had the opportunity to log one of the tri-holers, and with only KLM examples remaining in service, I need to act now!

So, can I ask for your combined advice on the routes that KLM will be operating with their MD-11s over the coming months.

Ideally, I'm looking at late 2010 or early 2011 for the trip, but can act sooner if I need to although I belive KL will be holding on to the fleet for another year or two? I'd prefer to end up in Canada or the US but can travel elsewhere, i'm just looking for freedom of movement when i get to the other end!

Thanks for your help and advice!

Hello,

Coincidently I recently checked myself where they fly to, so here is what I found out:

SFO
YUL
YVR
PTY
BON-UIO-GYE
PBM
THR

Hope this is correct, please feel free to add or amend. The BON flight extends to UIO & GYE, a nice route which I will combine with a return through PTY, most likely end of 2010.

Also, I can not stop to recommend the 'Airline Route Mapper' tool which someone posted a while back in the civil aviation forum:

http://arm.64hosts.com/

It is the right toy for a plane geek who wants to find a particular aircraft type in a worldwide schedule. Two mouse clicks and you can filter all current MD-11 flights (or any other interesting aircraft type)

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Loran

As things stand, I think KLM are looking at retiring the MD-11s from 2012-2015. So you've still got a while yet.

I'm also planning a flight on them at some point. Going to use it as a bit of a challenge; take a one way to anywhere, then make my own way back in stages by LCC or overland/water.

I flew KL M11s 5-6 years ago on AMS-CAI-AMS. Good experiences.

you missed the once-weekly AMS-SXM-BON-AMS flight, otherwise it seems pretty ok

Thanks, I didn't know about this service. Do you know which day it operates? Sounds like a even more interesting way of getting to BON

I've managed to find some decent...ish fares for LHR-AMS-YUL and return so I might look at those. Need to find cheap onward connections to DCA from there though to be able to afford the trip on the MD-11.

ok,

on a friday, you can fly

KL763
AMS 1300-1555 SXM
SXM 1705-1840 BON
then wait for the arrival of
KL753
BON 0430-0620 GYE
GYE 0720-0810 UIO

not bad, 4 legs / 2 a/c AMS to UIO

of course UIO - AMS is another matter completely

Thanks for this info, definitely a way of arriving in-style at UIO

For some reason I always thought that the route was BON-UIO-GYE-BON and not the other way round. Nevertheless an interesting trip, especially because you can choose some alternative return options from the KLM website (incl. AF ex-HAV, or KLM ex-PTY).

More like a way of arriving completely tired. the KL753 is bad enough (flown it twice).

It used to be UIO-GYE, but they changed it around a couple of years ago. I think (but I'm not sure) because of weather conditions in UIO. Due to the altitude it can be quite foggy/cloudy in the early morning and landing at GYE first gives it time to clear up.

Anyway, Ecuador is really with the trip!!!

Lol, true. Especially because I will have to connect from ZRH or MUC and the departure time out of BON is a total nightmare. Looks like a stopover in BON to make things easier, I will check with my travel agent to see if there are any restrictions and if this route is possible.
