Can An Airline Sort Bags By Class?

Fri Apr 02, 2010 5:05 am

If someone is in first or business on a multi stop international flight be sorted so those bags come out first? I have found on all airlines, no matter what class of travel, bags come out in any order!
The world is missing love, let's use our flights to spread it!

I'm sure they do, I regularly see the premium class-tagged bags coming out first after flying SAA long haul.

If they aren't going to do it, why tag the bag as such in the first place?
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

It's one of the best things about AC Elite (*A Gold) for me. On AC, business class, elite, and super elite travellers have the bags lagged 'priority', and they always seem to come out first. Generally I think the handlers actually load the priority bags on to one cart first and then immediately go to drop them off, while other handlers continue to load the Y class bags onto a different cart which gets taken to the drop point when it is full.

At UA bags are tagged and usually separated to a final destination. For example if you had a flight MCO-DEN-LAX. your first leg would just be thrown in with the rest of the transfers. And on the second leg they would be loaded last to make sure they came off first. Of course it all depends on the station, runner, etc. On INTL flights at IAD we would throw priority tagged bags in a seperate can, and load that one last.

That's just their operation in a nutshell. Not sure about everyone else.

At DL those bags are tagged with the yellow "Priority" tag. The bags are separated during the offload and then loaded onto the claim belt first. The problem starts when the yellow tags are not secured to the bag tag, there is a small printed "Priority" on both sides of the bar code area on the bag tag. But it is very difficult to see at night and they are missed and not placed on first with the tagged ones.

I believe the same process works at AA, with the similar issues - First/Business/ExecPlats get the priority tags. The tags are bright orange, which might be slightly more noticeable for handlers. From what I've seen the priority-tagged bags on AA come out among the first 7 out of every 10 times - with some variants depending on airports involved in the routing.

At QR, VA and EK, the tags are purly for pax to see and to assist the bag guys. The class is encoded into the normal thermal tag and when scanned in the bag room the bag is placed in a special priority can which is generally offloaded first.

LH loves bagage distrubution. Theres Local, Transfer, Hot or Short transfer, Priority (for senators) and HON (HON Circle bagage)

Ideally they want each subtype to have its own net section which is usually impossible. However they always load priorities and hot transfers in front of the door. If you fail to load the HON luggage in front of the door you might just get shot.

As far as I can gather, on NZ the first bags to come out are the "priority" ones.

So I guess they can sort.

SQ Certainly do, even have them on a separate carousel at some destinations.

As quoted by a BA staff member at the LHR T5 bag drop as she placed the priority labels on our bags "these ensure your bags get on the carousel 1st here, but I can't guarantee it at your destination"
She was right, duly at SFO all the priority bags came off nearly last.

My experience (with AA and CO mostly) has been that the priority tagging works a lot better when landing at the carriers home country.
