Unique Flights Around The World?

Mon Apr 05, 2010 10:58 am

Hi guys apologies if this is in the wrong thread but I wanted to know where to get information on unique flights. Flights that others wouldn't normally think of except A.netters.

E.g. KU from FRA to GVA
PK from AMS to IST

If any of you have any other ones as I'm sure there are thousands more, it would be great to share them

Thanks

Hi uaeflyer,

thanks for you response.

I don't think AI flies this route anymore. I did this in 2006 as it was the cheapest J class ticket at £990, but you get what you pay for.

The SQ looks like a good one.

Unfortunately these flights are becoming rarer and rarer these days, as escalating cost pressures make most multi-stop flights unviable. Moreover, the increasing prevalence of LCCs (especially on int'l and longer haul flights) and open sky agreements have made many segments far more competitive than in the past. Most of the remaining "unique flights" can be found to/from/between slot-restricted congested airports (i.e. KU on JFK-LHR, KE on LAX-NRT), on segments that are still restricted by bilaterals (this is why you still see so many tags by foreign carriers in Asia), or out of sheer operating necessity due to the vast distances between the airline's hub and intended destination (JL on JFK-GRU, VS on HKG-SYD, SQ on SFO-ICN, NZ on LAX-LHR, etc.). Finally, you also see airlines still operating relatively short flights that are holdovers from a bygone era (i.e. CX on DXB-BOM, KE on LAX-NRT, NZ on LAX-RAR).

It's still running ...
But Air France flying from a French city (PTP) to MIA, what is so "unique" about it ?

My favorite that is still active is MH from CPT to EZE. Flew this route once and it was quite fun to get a taste of Malaysia, a country I love, from Africa to South America.

In the early 1980's, LY from BRU-LHR, just to fly on a B720B.

(who wouldn't?)

These seem like good routes but I wonder if the loads would be worthwhile?

This route definitely wets my appetite. I already checked the MH website and its £370 for a one way. Not bad considering the distance.

Seeing as MAN is just up the road from me here in London, I might fly this one, just to experience the SQ Biz Class. Has anyone flown this short sector before?

I guess I made a mistake back there, thought it was for unique flights from the hub.

Here's one.

SQ
DME-IAH

Are SQ permitted to sell seats between MAN and MUC?

Also EK LCA-MLA, daily A330-200 operating DXB-LCA-MLA with 5th freedom rights..

A couple of others that come to mind (must be the only A340s between cities in North America).

PR YVR-LAS-YVR A340-300 4 per week.
RJ YUL-DTW-YUL A340-200 2 per week.

Regarding this sector, I only got told about it a few hours ago and I have already bought a one way ticket with SQ to sample their Business Class without having to travel to SIN. Looking forward to the B77W!

LanChile MAD-FRA
KE MAD-AMS
SQ BCN-MXP (although i don't know it it has 5th freedom rights)
Air Mali MAD-ORY (as a stopover from Bamako to Paris- again no knowledge if there are 5th freedom rights between MAD and ORY- which for some reason doesn't show up on their website but is definitely up and running)

Air China MAD-GRU is also quite a random one, although it's been increasing its frequency since it was started so it's probably doing very well.

How well you know me, after writing my first TR I can't stop! LOL! Definitely will be writing a TR about this and the return sector on BA in Euro Traveller. I don't know if there have been any TR's for MAN-MUC?

It amazes me how many flights EK has connecting in and out of Oz. Forgive my ignorance but how are the pax loads on these routes?

I believe the bulk of passengers on the transtasman sectors are local passengers (ie. not continuing onto DXB and beyond) I suppose they haul some serious freight on these sectors too. Come to think of it for kiwi's EK requires at least two stops to Europe whereas SQ, TG, NZ, CX and KE offer one stop service via Asia and if you include Alliance partners Star (though NZ) and Oneworld (through QF) offer one stop services to Europe via North America. Surely the 77L is capable of a DXB-AKL non stop service.
