Arriving At ATL On An International Flight

Thu Apr 08, 2010 3:47 pm

Do all passengers arriving at ATL on international flights clear FIS in Concourse E? If so, do passengers travelling to ATL have to re-clear security in order to make it back to the main terminal? Isn't this a bit of a pain?

Yes, all international flights arrive in E, except from Canada and such. You do have to re-check your bags and re-clear security before being able to go on to the other concourses. In my experiences, the whole process is usually fairly quick, but when I arrived back from KWI early in the morning, it took forever because all of the flights from the middle east/india were arriving at that time. The longest I've ever spent was about an hour, with 20-30 minutes being average. Coming back from DUB is nice because you pre-clear there and walk right to bag re-check.

This is not confined to ATL, just had to do the same thing at LAX and SFO. Used to have to do this at DFW, but the new terminal D may have fixed this; just not sure as I cannot remember my last international flight into DFW, even though it was this past January.

I'm not talking about transiting passengers, for which ATL seems like a great setup. But for passengers whose final destination is Atlanta, it seems like a bit of a pain.

All international passengers arriving to the US have to follow the same procedure, it was all changed after Sept 11, if I am not mistaken. MIA works just like that too!!

The difference with Hartsfiel-Jackson is that pax who are not connecting and staying in ATL have to recheck there bags as well. Quite a pain I must admit.
Next flights: AF ORY-TLN-ORY; CDG-BOD-CDG; KL CDG-AMS-ADD-AMS-CDG; AF CDG-ATL; DL ATL-MSY-ATL; AF ATL-CDG

In the DL network, ATL and MEM are the same in which you *have* to recheck your bags, even if you are terminating your travels there.

The only time I've arrived in ATL internationally was on a DXB-ATL flight. We ended up being the first one in, beating out all the other early arrivals from EZE, GRU, SCL, etc. So, that was a really nice experience - I cleared CBP in only 5-6 minutes. I can see how ATL is probably absolute hell during peak Europe arrivals though.

It is a pain but it is true. Absolutely ridiculous and never quite figured out what they expect to find after you've been on a plane for 10hrs. It's the first sign that you've reached the US of A

Yes it is a pain.
The new concourse under construction east of concourse E will change this for international arrivals whose final destination is ATL. It will have a seperated exit to landside, but also the option to access (with new security check) the existing concourses via the underground train (to be extended).
Last Thursday it took me 1 hour from stepping off the a/c to reclaiming my bags for the 2nd time after having flown in on LH from FRA. CBP was seriously understaffed for the number of pax to be processed, IMO.
