Best Southern European Airport For US

Mon Apr 19, 2010 7:11 am

I'm making a contingency plan in case the volcano eruptions continue during the summer.
My original plan was to fly OSL-LHR-EWR and JFK-LHR-OSL in august and september, but with LHR being one of the most vulnerable airports, i'm considering a backup plan that involves taking a few days extra vacation and using ground transportation from Norway to Spain or Italy (Seems like they're the only ones that are open). Which of these countries are best for europe-NYC?

From Barcelona we have DL to JFK and CO to EWR, IIRC.

If this goes on till the summer no airline will be able to survive!

I guess you're right. But if they still fly, Barcelona seems like the best choice. 48 hours on a bus with four transfers just to get to the airport. Woho:p

Also AA does JFK-BCN

I am flying BCN-LHR-MIA in 10 days, if the situation does not change in a day or two I am going to try to schedule something direct out of BCN or MAD.

Since both BA and AA are in the same alliance, would it be possible to change the booking to AA if it would come to that?

FCO has service to JFK on AZ, AA and DL. To EWR on AZ and CO. The airport has been open throughout and can be easily reached by overnight train from Paris, or through Germany, Switzerland and Milan.

If availability is a problem and you can handle it after having come down from Oslo, US has service to PHL, UA to IAD and AZ to BOS.

If you're going through Spain I think MAD is a better bet than BCN.
