52-minute Connection @ ORD

Tue Apr 20, 2010 8:44 pm

Hi everyone,

I booked myself on UA, flying MCI-ORD-AVL in July. The price was good ($286 r/t with taxes and fees), but I'm a little concerned about the connection time. The MCI-ORD flight is mainline (A320) and the ORD-AVL is regional (CRJ).

I have a 52-minute connection in ORD. I've been through ORD a few times on connections, but I've had more than 52 minutes, so I wasn't concerned.

Based on past experience, it looks like my MCI flight will probably arrive in Terminal 1 (Concourse B or C) and my AVL flight will depart from Terminal 2 (Concourse E or F), though it could possibly depart from Terminal 1.

Will I have enough time to make my connection? If I don't make the 1 PM flight to AVL, I will have to wait several hours for the next UA flight (or I could ask to be put on a US flight through CLT, couldn't I, as UA and US are * Alliance partners?).

Also, as a precaution, should I pay the extra $14 and get a seat in Economy Plus for the MCI-ORD flight? I was able to get a seat in regular Economy near the middle of the A320.

Thanks!

It is an easy walk from Terminal one to Terminal 2, so really, 50 minutes is plenty of time. Down the escalator, underground moving walkways, and up the escalator. If I had that connection, I wouldn't worry one bit. I make a similar walk every time I fly to Asia, and my connections are usually less than an hour. Piece of cake. Providing your incoming flight is on time. Don't sweat it. And for such a short domestic flight, E+ isn't really necessary. Unless you are 6'5".

There is a shuttle bus that connects gate C-9 and gate F-3, so you should have no problem -- if everything is on time.

From the B concourse, you can walk since B and F are connected by a walkway. Don't, however, stop at Johnny Rockets -- at the base of F concourse -- for a Double Smoked-Bacon Burger, a double-thick milk shake, or batter-dipped french fries with ceasar dipping sauce or you will miss your connection.

LOL, I'm 5'10, so it looks like that wouldn't be a problem. Thank you for your advice!

Thank you for your advice, as well! Hahahaha, that burger, shake, and fries from Johnny Rockets DOES sound tempting, though.

Don't forget that the RJ flights generally don't start to board until 10 or 15 minutes before departure time. Also, if your inboard mainline flight is delayed, odds are good that the AVL flight will be late too - the regional flights always get delayed before mainline does.
Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

As others have said, you should be fine.

Once in a great while UX flights will leave from the C gates/B20-22, but usually, like you noted, they leave from E and F.

If you arrive into the C gates, grab the shuttle bus at C9. Runs every couple minutes right across the ramp to E3. To walk from there to F11, the end of the F gates, takes 5 minutes at most.

If you arrive into the B gates, just keep walking past the dinosaur skeleton, the TSA Checkpoint, Johnny Rockets, etc to the E and F gates. It is a bit of a longer walk....but I've had people arrive from ORD who made a B22-F11 run in 8 minutes (maximum, from their IN time to their OUT time was 8 minutes, so unless they were very first off, it was probably 5-7). DAMN impressive.
