What Do You Mean You're Still Stuck In Europe?

Thu Apr 22, 2010 4:16 am

I was just on BA.com and could buy tickets in all cabins to NY, ORD, LAX, IAD and other cities for Thursday and Friday 22 and 23 April. Therefore, is it safe to say everyone is on their way? What is all this about not having seats until May 6th for some people. The schedules are on the internet and if the seats are there you should be able to get on if you have been stranded. I did not see any flights on BA that were sold out coming to America on Thursday.

Cheers,
BP1

Virgin is sold out for a few days on JFK-LHR but BA has space. Interesting.

And BA has space to cities outside the USA - looking at LHR to SIN, JNB, NRT and others.

If you need to get out and your other airline won't help you, buy a ticket on BA and get your other airline to refund your money later. The good news is, there are seats on BA and there is a way to get you home on Thursday 22 April 2010.

Why is VS sold out for days in some markets whereas BA has seats in all 3 cabins for sale?

Cheers,

Well, I suppose the website information is temporarily not updated ? It's quite likely that the backlog is not cleared yet.

Singapore Airlines has seats out of LHR on Friday from their web site.

A fellow a.netter wrote a few hours ago that his LHR-LAX flight on Wednesday was only 3/4 full. So that is saying something....

It sounds like you're trying to make a general statement/question based on one airline and a few city pairs. I think you'd need to do a lot more research into actual availability before saying that.

For example, I know that here at VS in MCO, available seats are 2 or less on any given flight before May. These availability numbers are changing by the minute, literally. And trust me - I've been looking at them for the last 13 hours straight!

Also - I just wanted to mention that VS has disable any new bookings for flights before 01May. In other words, you must already have a ticket for a VS flight in order to book onto any flight in the month of April. The system has been set up to automatically cancel any requests for seats in April if it's on a new booking.

At any other point in time other then now, that statement is true. However, due to the unique situation, I doubt many airlines have authorized many Europe flights to be overbooked at the moment.

As we know, most airlines give priority to people who have booked tickets on a given flight, instead of those who may have been stuck at the destination longer.

So its quite possible that an airline is still selling tickets for a flight, even if there is a thousand other people wanting on that flight and expecting their airline to tell them when they can fly. All you need is that the airline commits people from the stranded list to the flight at the last minute. First, they sell as many tickets as they can, then they take the stranded people.

The main problem appears to be on flights back to Europe, with holiday destinations being particularly bad. We are hearing on the media about people being quoted May 6th, or even later to get a flight home. MCO - LGW is a typical example, where due to it being the end of the school holidays, all the flights will have been more or less fully booked for last Thursday, Friday, Saturday. All these have been lost, and the passengers are now at the back of the queue. Outbound will be easier, as many will have abandoned their plans, having already lost near to half their trip.

A friend of mine is booked on QF BKK-LHR - He's been told the first available flight home is now May 16th!
The problem, at least for the UK, seems to be getting in, not out.

Last month a friend missed his flight on Virgin out of LAX, but with enough crying he was able to use that ticket to get on the next BA flight with no extra cost.

I'd tell them to book me the other way - BKK-USA-LON/UK. I wonder if airlines are offering this as an option, it might take more than twice as long but it gets people back sooner ad will save the carrier money if it's cutting two weeks off a hotel bill for them.

Probably canceled reservations or changes to a later date of flight may be opening some seats now. The airlines still have to sell some new seats to keep cash flow going, to keep high value customers happy. Some stranded pax may have chosen other ways to get home on their own via other routes that were available.

The most critical situation seems to be for those on the lowest fare tiers, from holiday locations, with discount, independent or charter airliners, so limited in being able to transfer to other/major carriers. Perhaps Virgin could move their pax stranded in MCO via their Virgin America sub to Miami, New York or other gateway cities for Virgin flights to the UK. Charters may have to run deadhead (empty) fights to certain holiday locations to bring back stranded pax who don't have any other options.

VS is not taking reservations for new passengers until the end of the month. All seats are zero'd out.

I like the thinking out of the box, however this would be a lot more work then just putting pax on DL, UA, US, etc. First, VX isn't in MCO, only FLL, so we'd have to get the pax there first. Also, it may sound surprising, but at VS we can't book into the VX system. Remember, VX is ticketless.

Quoting Ltbewr (Reply 16):

I've heard from pax that the charters are actually doing less help then the scheduled operators. Some aren't doing anything. Period. Leaving pax literally stranded...

Quoting AirlineCritic (Reply 11):
First, they sell as many tickets as they can, then they take the stranded people.

Those stranded pax are sure glad you're not running an airline. I mean no airline wants to lose money right now, but that shouldn't be sacrificed in a situation like this. Prioritize the stranded pax first, for the sake of humanity. This is why no new bookings can be made on VS for flights before May 1st.

Quoting DLD9S (Reply 18):

Not necessarily true. They aren't "zero'd out". Availability is still there. But as I said in a post above, if you try to take a seat before May 1st and it's in a booking that has just been created, it will auto cancel within 10 seconds.

The problem is getting back!!

A fellow netters friends are stuck in LAX with seats booked on the 25th. I spent nearly ALL day along with a fellow workmate (while doing our own back office work) trying to find ANY routing out to London any earlier, we found nothing!

BA is waving the usual restrictions on non-full-fare tickets to allow passengers who don't really need to travel right away to reschedule or get a refund at no cost, just to get extra seats for stranded passengers, so I would guess they do need the extra seats...

I was just on expedia.com and they have several options to get to Europe from the USA today, Friday and Saturday- mostly through Canada with a connection, but they have options and if you have been sleeping at LAX, ORD, JFK, MIA and others for days, then why not give this a try as an option - it will get you home!!!

Good Luck,

Thanks!

JFK is actually very busy for the next few days with the odd seat available, and some people cancelling at the request of BA to get seats available for passengers trying to get home. Looking at the system yesterday its very busy! The same as VS!

Hi Everyone:

If stuck in the USA - think out of the box: (This idea from Expedia)

Expedia shows this for Friday:

LAX-ORD-MUC-LHR on UA and LH 0 just ask your airline for a F.I.M. (Flight Interruption Manifest) to get on UA and LH.

Good Luck,

For tomorrow April 23rd, there are more than 6 seats open in WT+, CW, and F classes on BA193 LHR-DFW. On the way back, BA192 DFW-LHR, there's only 3 seats open in F class.
