Airlines Your Parents Flew On, But You Can't

Fri Apr 23, 2010 3:50 pm

My dad has been a frequent traveler since 1969 and has flown on a lot of planes and airlines that I can never fly on, because they no longer exist. For example my dad flew on a few TWA CV-880s back in the day. Well he and I both share the fact that we have flown with TWA, but I can't claim that I ever flew on an 880. I could travel the world over and never get the chance to fly on an 880, because there are no flying examples left.

What are some airlines or planes that your parents have flown on, but you will never will be able to?

My dad has flown on People's Express, United Arab Airlines, Pan Am, Allegeny, Hughes Air West, Braniff, BEA, BAOC, Texas International, and Piedmont. None of those airlines exist anymore and I'll never have the pleasure of flying them. Dad and I share a list of defunct airlines that we both have flown on.

Other than the CV-880 there are not any planes that dad has flown on that I could never fly on. Dad flew on a Frontier CV580 once. I have never flown on a 580, but there some still around so I still may the the opertunity one day. I doubt I ever get a chance to fly on a 747-100, but you never know...

I am happy that I am old enough that I already have planes like the 707, DC-8 and L1011 under my belt. I would like to fly on the A380 or A340 so I can have something on my list that my dad doesn't.

My mam flew on Pan American several times, in the States, and in their European service to Berlin.

EI still exist but their 747s dont, she also got to fly on one of those, quite jealous of that.....

Braathens S.A.F.E B767-200. I got to fly Braathens Safe many times, but never their 767 wich they only had for a couple of years. The B767 has never looked so good as in this livery. Braathens S.A.F.E is no longer operating:

My dad remembers flying Eastern and Flying Tigers. He probably flew on an FT DC-8.

The only ones I can remember that I know my parents flew are Wardair and Pacific Western and Canadian Pacific. I'd love to fly any of them, especially Wardair after hearing all the stories about how wonderful they were.

I know my parents flew on one of these a few months before I was born (so technically I did too!):

I should have included World for my dad. He flew on them when he was in the Army. I doubt I'll ever get a chance to fly with them.

Quoting Larshjort (Reply 7):
Carevelle

I forgot that one. My dad flew on one of those once back in 1970. It overan the runway ORY, It was the only time my in all of the years that my dad has traveled that he was involved in some sort of accident.

Quoting Superfly (Reply 3):
NetJets.

Maybe one day you will too.

I have flown on quite a few in my nearly 50 years of flying on airliners. However, my folks did fly on American DC-6 and DC-7s before me as well as Pan American B707s. I also know that they experienced a DH Trident at least on one occasion as well as a BN Orange 747!

Well I think it is inevitable given the generation gap that my father flew on many, many carriers and aircraft types that are no longer in service.

I'm not too sure about defunct carriers my dad must have flown on but here are the ones I can think of...

PanAm
BEA
BOAC
Sabena
Air Anglia
BKS
Dan Air

Aircraft types? Wow this is where I get jealous of my old man...

Viscount
Vanguard
VC10
F27
707
720
Caravelle
DC8
DC7
747-100
Britannia
Constellation
Herald
Ambassador

About the closest I can come up with is my father flying aboard a CO A300 on a business trip. In addition, my grandparents flew aboard a TWA L-1011

There's probably a few others, I will have to ask him in the future.

Planes:

There's probably a few more.

My mother's side:
Airlines:
Piedmont

Planes (most of which were during her years as a stewardess for AA back in a day, years before I was born):

Planes:
DC-6
Convair 240
Convair 880

Now gang.....you are messing with Isitsafenow's age here.
I happen to know he has logged flights in DC 3's,4's, Martins and Convair 340 and 440's, not to exclude a slew of first generation jets.

My mom flew Pacific Southwest Airlines quite often before I was born. The airline "died" about a month before I came along...
